You know what, man? Shut the hell up. It's not gonna happen. And that's what really bothers me about the issue. It's what bothered me about during the SotU.
Bush is doing all this to appease his most conservative constituents. But what, exactly, are they going to do if he displeases them? There's no other Republican presidential candidate. They're sure as hell never going to back a Democrat. So why is he addressing the issue at all? I honestly believe that gay marriage/civil unions/equal rights etc. is not a fence-sitting issue; this is not what is going to pull undecided Americans into either camp. People have pretty much got their minds made up one way or another.
Therefore, since the idea that he needs conservative votes is ludicrous, there's only one way to see his pushing the issue: as a giant FUCK YOU to the millions of gay Americans and proponents of gay rights that he claims to lead and represent.
A constitutional amendment is never going to pass the House and Senate. He cannot govern individual states' positions on gay marriage. So he's just going nyah-nyah at all of us.
I hate this administration. I really, really do. And though I don't think the marriage amendment is ever going to fly, there's a hell of a lot more damage they could do if we hand them four more years.
Good GOD people need to vote in November. Voter turnout in this country is pathetic in this country compared to Europe, for tons of different reasons, but that's got to change.

I need J/N sap badly, and I'm going to write it myself.
