technical help

Well, fuck.

In an attempt to straighten out the wonkiness I have witnessed in my system this summer, I downloaded Microsoft Anti-Spyware from their website (this was when I was talking to you, [livejournal.com profile] hannahrorlve, and why I stopped responding -- when I open Internet Explorer, AOL seizes up). The scan ran okay and it detected a bunch of spyware, which is not surprising, including stuff I recognized as coming from Kazaa. I removed what it said to remove, except for WinTools, which is the worst of the lot and has so far proven impossible to delete. It told me it had been removed, but when I rebooted it was still there. I'm also still getting the message that a virus called Vundo.dll has infected various files. And the system is running normally according to the Anti-Spyware, but it's still really slow and hiccupy.

Does anybody know how to get rid of WinTools, or what this Vundo.dll thing is?

God. I really cannot afford to get this fixed by a professional right now. If it even can be fixed. If not...I really cannot afford to buy a new computer right now. Or ever in the foreseeable future.

Looks like there's a Vundo and a (newer) Vundo-B out there:

Vundo
Vundo-B

Thank you!!!

God, I only wish I wasn't such a coward when it comes to computers. The notion of trying those fix-its turns me white. But I figure, if I take it to Best Buy and I'm like "I KNOW what's wrong with it and I KNOW how to fix it, I just want you to do it FOR me," they won't charge me my firstborn child, right? Eh?

Courage!! It's only scary the first (few) times. After that, you start to feel invincible, and then it's fun.

On the other hand... Geek Squad does make house calls :)
