As I am now rewatching the Grey's Anatomy premiere on tape, I'll go for first thoughts remembered and second thoughts, uh, thought.
I was so confused by the shot of Addison standing in the rain after Derek threw her out, because of course I had no idea what it meant. Love the conference outside the bathroom, with the rest of them all in consensus over how dark and twisty Mere is. At first I was thinking they were overreacting because it was only the next morning, but lying all night on the bathroom floor, in a prom dress...yeeeeah. And really pretty Dixie Chicks song from their latest.
Izzie's flashbacks to the mixer are both funny and poignant. In this first one -- aww! The dress she wore on her first date with Alex! And she looks so young and innocent with her hair pulled back like that. I could swear I hear Tegan and Sara playing in the background, which if I'm not imagining it is a stroke of genius (aha! Found out from TWoP that it was indeed "Take Me Anywhere"). So George gets the first shift on the floor -- somehow fitting. When he says he's sorry, and their hands are so close, and he just kind of lifts his pinkie and strokes her hand -- oh.
Man, that guy who takes Denny is kind of an ass. Oh Jesus. Bailey apologizing to Izzie lying onthe bed, still, and all you see is pink...
Hee. "Well, shiva's what I know how to do, so that's what it is." I love Cristina's ocassional flecks of Jewishness.
McDreamy is the worst liar.
I liked the plague couple in general, and the guy was a great actor, but I wish they'd either given us a bit more time with them or had Bailey know them in some previous capacity to heighten the impact. Also, GA totally stole the plague from last year on "House." Or maybe every medical drama eventually does its very special Black Death storyline. I have to say, House did it better -- isn't it, um, really easily treatable these days? Some antibiotics, some shots, something. I mean, it's not airborne, so I don't see why everybody was so worried about it spreading. The quarantine was purely a deus ex machina, and GA is usually better than that.
Addison and Alex are really interesting together. Hot? Perhaps. Perhaps. Also, we knew from the first scene with the Teen Mommy Squad that it was the little blond one who wouldn't say anything.
I couldn't believe McDreamy didn't know Izzie and Denny were in love. I guess nobody talks to him. Because he's an asshat.
Hee. "All McGuilty." I'm glad to see Cristina is treating the Lost Panty Sex like the totally fucked-up episode it was.
The flashback to Richard and Ellis breaking it off really got to me, because I had just watched the episode where they talked about it, and damn, Ellis Grey hysterical long before the Alzheimer's set in...you definitely get the feeling that Mere never saw her like that. And Loretta Devine rocks the role of Adele. I hope she does leave the Chief. He was sort of asking for it
So much hate for Derek saying he wants to go see Meredith. Wants to barge into Mere and George and Izzie's house, he means. Asshat.
Hee. The way Container Suit Guy says "plague" totally reminds me of the beginning of Spamalot.
Speaking of, I've wanted to like Callie since the beginning, for three simple reasons. 1. She's played by Sara Ramirez. 2. She isn't a size negative-two (or, alternately, Katherine Heigl's perfect, perfect, perfectly curved body) 3. She loves George. And in this episode, I liked her with no reservation. I liked her interacting with the regular cast, and even with Finn.
Kate Walsh is great in her flashback. A totally different Addison from the cracked-to-shining Addie we've seen so far. And hey, my first shred of sympathy for Shepherd in a long time! Don't worry, I know he'll fuck it up after the commercial.
Cristina fangirling a dismissive Burke cracks me right up. So does George and Derek eating all the random locker food.
I like the frankness of "I don't know what to say to you," and that's what gets Izzie to finally open up. Her gripping Mere's hand is a beautiful shot -- this was when I started to cry.
McAssHat's red shirt in the bar flashback is so sleazy.
So is Addison the baby, or the clueless parents? Which one is Derek? Wait, I think she's the fourteen-year-old going back to class pretending everything is fine...
Really, the scenes between Bailey and Omar are eminently watchable because both actors are show-stoppingly good, but I just needed a little more to care that much. Even if Bailey had treated one of the two before, or something. I kind of wish they hadn't wasted the whole 'put your hands on my hands' visual on this storyline. I guess the whole thing here is that Bailey has to have her breakdown with near-stranger, not one of her fellow surgeons. Augh, now that I'm watching it again, it's so sad and so affecting and it just -- doesn't belong in this episode. Why didn't they save it for the greater focus it deserved?
George: You're an ass.
McDreamy: *creepy smug chuckle*
Dala: HATE!
I love Sara Ramirez's jean-covered thighs on my television. I really, really love them.
Addison with the girls and the baby is -- powerful, is the only word I can think of. And my god, the little blond one looks about ten.
I hope this whole maybe-possibly-love-Callie-someday-soonish thing doesn't go on much longer, because it'll get old.
Alex's mini-speech about survival might be my favorite lines in the ep, because it's so true, and it's just what Addison needs somebody to say but he doesn't know that.
How dare McAssHat look at George that way! It's only taken him two fucking seasons to be honest with his girlfriend/mistress, and I sincerely doubt he's informed his legal spouse yet.
Derek's confession and big smile -- Patrick Dempsey is working hard to sell this, but I just cannot buy this character anymore. I want him to suffer. A lot. And take it without a word except "I'm sorry for being such an ass for so long." I want Mere to be happy but...I just think she and McDreamy are a trainwreck as they currently stand.
Big cheers to Burke -- finally! -- and Cristina in bed, and a perfectly Cristina reaction to him being seriously injured. And here's where I started crying hard, all the way through the rest (loved Alex walking out with Olivia, btw) -- and Mere being there when Izzie's ready to stand up, and cutting away before we see skin when she unzips the dress -- all the little things. And of course a great song.
Oh, this show. This show does things to me.
