So they're (BBC, I assume) also filming The Ruby in the Smoke, with the girl who played Angel in "The Calcium Kid" and is now on "Doctor Who" (I know this because I catch the last few minutes before BSG, and she has a very distinctive mouth) as Sally Lockhart ::frets:: DO NO FUCK UP MY PHILIP PULLMAN, PEOPLE. Though I'm way more concerned about HDM. I'm just not convinced any studio will ever get The Amber Spyglass made, even if "The Golden Compass" adaptation ends up a huge success -- and it could; the market for epic fantasy is wide open, for reasons I don't need to tell you guys of all people, and there's some serious talent lined up there. But Spyglass...without spoiling anybody who might like to read the trilogy, it's not just controversial, it's flat-out subversive, and they're young adult novels and the movies will have to be promoted as children-focused and yeeeeah, no one will ever think Harry Potter is heretical again. Because Pullman actually is. I suppose they could sanitize it, but then I'd hate it wholeheartedly, and I seriously doubt Pullman would let them. Anyone know how that works? I mean, IMDB lists him under the writing credits (before Stoppard), but I don't know if that means he actually contributes to the screenplay or if he's sold the rights and they can do whatever they want, or what.
I love those books with a love that is deep and true, and I can only imagine that this is what LotR fans felt when Peter Jackson got the job.
I need an icon of Lyra and Iorek from the original hardcover...
