Well. It's been a bit of a while. For some reason, getting out of the LJing habit is very easy to do at home. That said, I've been keeping and/or catching up with the flist and currently have 20 tabs open in one window and 29 in another, so beware of late comments from me. I think the best way to do this is with a quick day-by-day recap of the past week.

Saturday: Work. Bleah. Spent the first three hours straight running around after customers. Got in some hanging-out time at Katherine's afterward.

Sunday: Christmas Eve and, again, work. Which sucks, but we did get out of there by 7 like we were promised, and we had a good closing crew, and they bought us sandwiches. I dragged my ass to Aunt Carolyn's after, as per tradition, and napped on the couch while Aunt Carolyn rambled drunkenly about how everybody thinks she's a horrible parent (because...she is? Has been?). Upon getting home, we did the traditional opening of the out-of-town relatives' gifts, which included a DMC calender and "Casablanca" from Aunt Nancy, who is consisently good with such things. But actually Grandma Libby wins at this year's presents, as she sent the family a gingerbread lighthouse and me the tenth anniversary edition of The Golden Compass. Last-minute gift-wrapping, several viewings of different parts of "A Christmas Story," and bed.

Monday: Christmas! I made breakfast this year, since omelettes are the one dish I can cook. Swag included "Superman Returns," "Fellowship of the Ring," the "Firefly" series, the really good biography of Nelson, Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things (which has the loveliest cover I've seen in awhile), Stiff: the Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach (finished: morbid and funny and fascinating), iTunes gift card, new jeans, new gloves, very pretty gold earrings. After breakfast, I worked frantically to finish the shawl I was making for Grandma Lorraine, which was tricksy as I lost the pattern and had to make the border up on my own. It turned out okay, though. We finally made it to Grandma's, and it was a very peaceful holiday for us -- no shouting, no fighting, no excessive drunkenness, no weeping kids. The babies ran around playing with Natalie's Christmas presents, which she did not want to share. I had a very nice chat with my almost-cousin Zach, who's a sophomore at UMBC and has a very good head on his shoulders. All in all, quite a successful holiday.

Tuesday: Christmas morning-after gathering at Tina's, where Kat and Meg made Rachel Ray's toffee hot chocolate (yeah, it was as delicious as it sounds) and we watched "The Descent" (fricken scary) and "Dane Cook: Vicious Circle" ("What do you want, door-kicker?! I did my best..."). Some further hanging out at Kat's later, mostly consisting of showing off our favorite YouTube clips and flash animations.

Wednesday: Went to Virginia with Dad, Aunt Carolyn, and Jack to do geneology researh. Jack and I got bored and wandered around the town, which had exactly one flower shop, one kitschy craft shop, and one thrift shop. The trip was saved by a detour to Sonic, which of course is the best fast food in the world.

Thursday: Mom, Dad, and I went downtown to see "A Christmas Carol" at Ford's Theatre. The play was very good, although I kept staring at the presidential box in hopes of seeing attentive ghostly shimmers (no such luck). I wore the one nice semi-formal dress I own, which is black and lacey and very low-cut. We had dinner at Old Ebbit Grill, my favorite restaurant in D.C., and spent way too much money there.

Friday: Downtown again, this time to the National Archives' research room so Dad could continue his geneology thing. I was developing a cold and took a nap in an uncomfortable armchair before wandering off to the Gallery on my own. I tracked down the English art to feel homesick, and then stumbled upon a really nice exhibit of photographs of New Yorkers from the '50s and '60s. Once Dad had returned, we had lunch in the concourse cafe and crossed over to the East Building, which had a good exhibit of large Constable landscapes. I think I like Constable better than Turner. Walking back along the Mall, we considered hitting up the Air and Space to see the temporary American History exhibit, but as usual people were spilling out of its doors. The Natural History also seemed a bit crowded, and we didn't have the energy for any more art, so we headed home. After a long nap, I went over to Jessie's for a bit, but bailed early because of work today.

And this morning, I've done pretty much nothing. I still feel crappy, but not crappy enough to stay home. My mother would killl me if I tried. If only I could throw up! That always works. I suppose I'll take some cold medicine and try to last through at least the afternoon, after which the parents will be at the football game when I get home.

Oh, and somewhere in there I watched DMC with Dad, and it made me want to write a scene after Elizabeth pulls Norrington out of the pigpen. Also Keira Knightley/Jack Davenport. We shall see.

Alrighty, I'd better get some of those tabs knocked out.
