I'm watching the pilot for "The Black Donnollys" and loving it, although I must say the "Irish" score leaves something to be desired. Come on, people! Where are the Dropkick Murphys? The Pogues? Flogging Molly? The Dubliners? Even my beloved little Carbon Leaf?
I will keep y'all updated on this highly sensitive and important subject.
Ooooh. Still no use of good Irish punk/rock/oi, but I really like this (ironic in context) song that's in...Italian? I think?
Hmmm. The show's good, if not as good as I was hoping. I do worry about "from the writers of 'Crash' and 'Million Dollar Baby,'" because while I liked the first (even if it was neither as profound as it wanted to be nor deserving of BP over "Brokeback Mountain") and loved the second, subtlety wasn't the strong point of either movie. "Million Dollar Baby" did have some clever writing that got overshadowed by the sentimentality of the ending, though, and the better actors in "Crash" made their storylines work, so that's a plus. I dunno. I'm already attached to Tommy and Jenny (and Joey Ice Cream), but I need more time with the other characters. I wonder what the show would've been like if done by HBO or Showtime.
Yeeeeah, that whole spell-everything-out-in-72-pt-font trend from "Crash" is still alive and well. That'll get annoying fast (please shut up, anvilicious song with the actual chorus line "Somebody's gonna get hurt").But I feel I could still get into the premise and the characters, with time -- I'm already working with Jimmy. I'll rewatch the pilot when it airs and probably keep watching.
Okay, I may have to re-evaluate the music director, because this "Every time you close your eyes" song is fantastic and fits perfectly with the scene. ETA: Apparently it's The Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)." I'd never heard them before, but simply based on this song I want more. Anybody have any opinions on this band? Are they as awesome as that song?
Jesus Christ to the ending. See, that was perfect except for the voiceover. We get it already! It's happening onscreen right now! Shut the frack up, Haggis/Morresco and Joey Ice Cream! I'm hoping this will chill out after the pilot -- that it's mostly a method of introduction. I mean, the VM voiceovers are sometimes overused, but not every time they show up. Plus V's internal monologue is slightly different from Joey telling the story...okay, I'll shut up now. Definitely watching it again, for that great ending sequence (minus the VO) if nothing else. I give a tentative endorsement, revokable if it doesn't calm down and find its feet within a couple months. It definitely pings some of my storytelling kinks, and the acting was very strong. That also might be enough to overcome my basic objections to crime/mob dramas, which I only felt at parts; we will see.
