Oh, why not?

In the comments below, ask me a fannish question and I'll answer it or introduce a fannish topic and I'll discuss it, whatever it's about, under the cut tag (editing and re-editing my post as I add new answers)

My one requirement is that it be kept spoiler-free regarding AWE -- I'm getting more paranoid as the release approaches.

[livejournal.com profile] venusinchains asked (summarized): Does fandom/shipping foster women - help them feel part of a community and give them self-confidence? Or is it just another way for women to squabble over scanty resources...and find new and interesting ways to hurt each other?

This is difficult to answer because of my mono-fandom nature -- PotC is really the only fandom in which I've been very active, and it is generally a reasonable, laid-back, polite space for (majority) women to share squee and fic, be it slash, het, or gen. In my limited experience, I've definitely found it leaning toward the first option: I have some amazing, intelligent, interesting, enlightening women (and one man that I know of!) on my flist, and they have made fandom an overwhelmingly positive experience. On the other hand, just from being aware of larger fandoms and the occassional peek at fandom_wank, I could also see a case made for the latter. But it seems to me like most of the people involved in shipper wars and extreme wank would just find some other outlet for that energy if necessary, so I don't think fandom/LJ/the internet is really culpable for that kind of behavior.

If that roundabout answer makes sense :) And sorry, I haven't heard of anything written on women in fandom.

[livejournal.com profile] hils asked: Just how gay is Captain Jack Sparrow?

As gay as he wants to be, baby! Seriously, I think Jack slides up and down the Kinsey scale, both at whim and depending upon the person. I have often written him prone to emotional/romantic ties to men rather than women (the Jack+ Bill - Bill + 10 years = Jack+James equation), but that could just as well be situational. Jack'll take what he can get.

[livejournal.com profile] linaelyn asked: If you could choose any of your fandom universes in which to live, which one would it be?

Ooooh, that's a good one. Let's see..."Honey and the Moon," because I'd love to be a fly on the wall to witness any of those relationships. And if I'm playing Mary Sue, then "Beggars Banquet," because really, what's one more?

[livejournal.com profile] fabu asked: Where would you like to see the Norrington story arc go in AWE?

Norrington's is the storyline I'm most excited to see, because it took such a turn in DMC and I really can't tell what's coming for him (also, he is currently REALLY hard for me to write). Although I am hardcore anti-spoiler, I do know the inkling of a spoiler for Norrington, but it doesn't really tell me much about his character development or the plot of the film, so it doesn't bother me so much. Given my druthers, I'd want to see him become disillusioned with Beckett's greed and ambition (and control over Norrington), and work with the Pearls to bring him (and/or Davy Jones) down. Specifically, I think it'd be great if he got to work alongside either Jack or Will, and if he ended up saving one of them (he's already saved Elizabeth). I could buy him going back into the Navy for reals, not as Beckett's lapdog, or striking out on his own as a privateer. Shipwise, my ideal situation would be Will/Elizabeth with Jack/Will/Elizabeth subtext and, if not explicit subtext, the possibility of Norrington crossing their paths again on friendly terms. Open like the end of CoBP, basically.

Of course, Ted&Terry&Gore did not give me what I was expecting for DMC, but I loved it anyway. Oh, I can't wait! ::bounces:: Is it May yet?
Mood:: 'indifferent' indifferent
