I have a gigantic buttload of stuff to write about, but all I want to share at this moment is that I downloaded Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," hearing it all the way through for the first time. And I cannot get over how beautiful it is. I mean, I had listened to one of Amazon's little thirty-second snippets -- I think it was of the chorus -- and not been much impressed, because I've always loved Rufus Wainwright's version so much. Buckley's voice is thinner than Wainwright's, but the way he sings this song, it hurts more; it's so beautiful that it hurts. The ultimate factor is the instrumentation. Wainwright's version is piano-based, and though I still love it, I will go for any guitarwork over any piano, always. Buckley's guitar in this song is...transcendant. Haunting. Perfect.
I just thought that needed to be said before I do anything else tonight.
Jeff Buckley: new reigning king alongside queen Eva Cassidy in the kingdom of "WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DIE??? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DIE AND WHY DO SO FEW PEOPLE KNOW THEIR GENIUS???"
Which reminds me, I ran into an Eva Cassidy fan at the beach and she told me a 'new' album was going to drop that week; I've forgotten to look for it.
