Putting together a collection of gay/lesbian themed movies on Netflix (most likely to be sent for over winter break, when I don't have to deal with Vanessa). I combed their category and some lists on amazon, picked out a bunch I'd heard of and some I've wanted to see for awhile, but anybody want to poke me with something I missed? I'm looking for good movies, generally, not just the squee factor of members of the same gender kissing -- otherwise I would've just ordered everything I could find.

Already have: Wilde, The Sum of Us, Kissing Jessica Stein, The Children's Hour, If These Walls Could Talk 2, But I'm a Cheerleader, Velvet Goldmine, Red Dirt, Bent, Lost and Delirious, Get Real, Angels in America, Tipping the Velvet, Gods and Monsters, Beautiful Thing, Maurice, Torch Song Trilogy. Plus the documentary The Celluloid Closet. Damn, that's a lot of movies...

Also! I remember reading reviews for two movies, the titles of which now escape me. Both of them would've come out in the past three or four years. One was a documentary about Orthodox Jews and homosexuality, the other was about two gay soldiers in the Israeli army. Anybody remember these?

And The Band Played On (with Ian McKellen)
Philedelphia (Tom Hanks and Antonio... Antonio... Nummies)

The Celluloid Closet is pretty good. I wish it was more 'up to date' so to speak, but its based off an older book. Still, I'm glad it 'came out'. Once you watch that, you'll have several other references to check out.

I'd also rec "Knock Around Guys" even though it isn't a gay-themed mover per se, but... it has Vin Deisel walking into the sunset with another actor, and they're going to start 'a new life'... together. Elsewhere.

Okay, so, yeah, I'm a slasher, but still!

Cannot watch "Philadelphia" anymore as it makes me sob uncontrollably.

And HA! I saw the slash in "Knockaround Guys" too! Only ever found one fic. There so should've been more..

Thanks :)

*grin* I'd also Rec "Jeffrey" just cuz it has Patric Stewart (aka- Prof. X, Capt. Picard) In PINK. Playing a gay man.

"But Jeffrey! I'm a Pink Panther!" *nods* You must see.

You can never go wrong with the classic terribly cute canadian love story of lesbians and porn, "Better than Chocolate".

Bedrooms and Hallways (Hugo Weaving in a romantic comedy ensemble cast with gay, straight and bi-curious characters)

My Beautiful Laundrette (Daniel Day-Lewis - angry English punk and young Pakistani businessman lovers struggle against racism, class differences and family)

Prick Up Your Ears (Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina - the story of playwright Joe Orton and his lover, Kenneth Halliwell)

Jeffrey (Patrick Stewart steals the show)

Before Night Falls (story of gay Cuban dissident poet Reinaldo Arenas - features a cameo by Johnny Depp in dual roles as a transvestite and a prison guard)

Carrington (Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce as painter Dora Carrington and her soulmate, writer Lytton Strachey - she's in love with him, he's gay)

Love and Death on Long Island (John Hurt as a reclusive widowed writer who becomes infatuated with a young straight actor played by Jason Priestley)

The Crying Game (one of my favorite movies)

Hmm. Nearly all of my suggestions are British. Go figure.

I'm forgetting a lot, but that should get you started. ;)

Twilight of the Golds isn't bad, and does a good job with the idea of gayness being genetic. Also, I've heard that Bride of Frankenstein was the first gay movie. I haven't seen it, but from what I've heard about it (James Whale directing it, two men creating life, etc) the claim sounds accurate.

The one about the Orthodox Jews is Trembling Before G-d. That's not a typo, by the way. If you're highly religious, you're not supposed to write God's name, in whatever alphabet or form, in its whole form except in special circumstances.

Thanks! And that's what it was...yup, because then the name of God can be destroyed, I think.
