Okay. Quick question: PotC-era Spanish port, close to Port Royal/Tortuga. If, say, someone were to be kidnapped in Port Royal and someone else were to seek information about it in Tortuga and then sail to the Spanish port before the kidnappee was executed, it could all take place within a couple of weeks (the execution would be delayed this long for...various reasons).

I suppose I could use some other nation, but...I speak Spanish, dammit. I need the practice. And Will would make a passable Spaniard, with a little bootblack in his mustache and hair and eyebrows....

Oh, and I might not even write the damn thing. But this is just in case.

I have no clue, but make up a port if you can't find one. You have me curious about the story!! I wanna read it.

A Cuban port? Havana was around since the 17th century. Not certain if in reality they could reach the port in the time frame you mention, but we can all pretend. *g*

I am deeply intrigued.

Actually you might want to find an eastern Cuban port as Tortuga is actually off the northern coast of what is now Haiti. I'm certain there were some ports there I just can't remember the names.

Sorry to spam but: Santiago de Cuba. That was the eastern port I was thinking of.

Havana or any Cuban port would work. They're much closer to Tortuga than Port Royal is, actually.

Or if it was before the slave revolt on Hispanola/St Domingo, you could use one of the ports there.

This period map of the Caribbean might help. When I stumbled across it, I was surprised at how -close- Jamaica, Cuba and Tortuga/Hispanola were.

I think I will. That'd be a good time to do my long-overdue intro post as well.

A link on [livejournal.com profile] kiss_me_hardy is where I found that map, actually.

We're gonna pretend I'm not here, as I'm on flist-amnesty (shhh!), but have you tried Marquesate's invaluable site? It takes a bit of navigating to get to her PotC resources, but they're fantastic. Go to "Pirates of the Caribbean" -- enter -- scroll down to "Pirates of the Caribbean Fanfic Writers' Resources" -- then under "History of Piracy" check out the "Caribbean Guide." I haven't gone through it recently to see if it answers your specific question, but as I recall, she covers a wide range of (generally PotC-era) ports and such of various nationalities.

Not that this is a help, but did you know Cuba is over 700 miles long, and Havana has four forts guarding its harbor? Santiago is much closer than Havana, and has only one fort.

That's good to know -- [livejournal.com profile] monkeypuzzle recommended it too. Thanks!

Hey, if you'd like to know of all the Spanish ports there, here's a site that has a list:
http://www.geocities.com/cptblood_1999/page18.html

Then best to look at the maps of the Caribbe (as already provided by everyone else ^_^) and choose the appropriate location.

Hope this helps!

Hmm, just did a little research. You know, I'm not sure whether they mention which Tortugas in the movie (the area of Florida or the area south of Haiti/Dominican Rep.)...Well depending on which would depend on what port. If it's Florida, most likely then VeraCruz but if it's the other, then Santo Domingo would probably be your best bet...

Sorry, got a little carried away wanting to research this (happens sometimes, can't let things go...*to herself: let it go, let it go*

Oops, forgot to say, only just mentioned those two because during the 17th century, they were two of Spains more valued holdings...

*'s curios*

you won't tell me who's going to be the kidnapee, aye?

But I agree with you about Will. He's definitely going to be a good Spaniard.

Well, it's somebody who lives in Port Royal and is not Will, as he's going to have to pretend to be a Spanish guard in order to rescue this person. And it's set in the universe of one of my recent (supposed to be stand-alone, dammit) fics. Beyond that, I'm not sayin' a word yet :)
