Computer lab again. So I survived another night with OMG NO HEAT. I wasn't exaggerating. There is literally no heat coming through the vent in our stupid fucking room. We called Maintenance yesterday, and just like when the air conditioning didn't work, they said they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Vanessa reports that they're going to bring in the contractor, but fuck knows how long that'll be. If we haven't heard anything by Friday, I'm calling again and giving them shit. It's one thing to be bundled up in four layers when you walk from class to class in 20-degree weather. That's expected.

It's entirely another to be huddled under a down comforter and a heavy-duty sleeping back, watching your breath frost IN YOUR DAMN DORM ROOM.

Yesterday I hung out around this side of campus from 11:00 to 7:30, just because I didn't see the point in taking that long, cold walk to get back to a room with no heat and no Internet when I would just have to trudge back out into the cold anyway.

I worship my peacoat. I bow to it and offer dead virgins. For you see, it's not just any peacoat you can pick up at the Gap or Old Navy -- it's an actual Navy-issue peacoat, thick wool, silk-lined, and the warmest garment known to man. Daddy wore it until it wouldn't button over his stomach and then gave it to me a few years ago. He says one night he was at a bar and, when it was time to leave, found that someone had taken his coat. So somewhat in his cups and obviously not wanting to brave the winter weather unprepared, he snagged the first unattended coat he came upon: the peacoat. Unethical, perhaps, but a bit of family history nonetheless, and a blessing thirty years later.

On the other hand, I don't have a hat. First thing this weekend I'm going to go out and buy a hat. The ones in the campus store are hand-knit and horrendously overpriced.

Oh! I keep forgetting to say THANK YOU for the buck-up responses. I loved them all and meant to reply to them Monday when I got back to school, but then with the no Internet, and I've got to get to work and class so I don't really have time to do it now. But rest assured, I <3 YOU ALL and I was mightily cheered by every single cmomment, and the ones from yesterday too. I will catch up with the flist once I get Internet access from the comfort of my own room igloo.

One more thing.

IT'S COLD DAMMIT.
Mood:: 'cold' cold

brrrrrrr *warm hugs* I feel vaguely guilty for being huddled in front of a space heater here in my heated office building.

Potentially cheering: how does the last weekend in February look for you? Busy? Relatively free? Available for kidnapping by rabid sailslashers? As it happens, [livejournal.com profile] commodorified will be down here around then, and that weekend so will [livejournal.com profile] q_skud and [livejournal.com profile] blackhound and anyone else we can haul into things. This is the "last chance to get together before Skud leaves the continent" gettogether and the desire -- demand even -- to have you included has been expressed. *g*

I lust after your peacoat.

A friend of mine - one of my old teachers - owns a captive-bred wolf. The wolf sheds copiously in winter and spring (it needs to, really) and one day's worth of fur fills a plastic bag that they give for supermarket produce. I told the teacher she should save the fur and use that as lining in a homemade coat. Now that would be quite something.

Oh, this almost makes me freeze, too! I wish I could send you a warm blanket or something. But you have your peacoat and please keep in mind that I'm really envious of it!

*gives warm hugs*
