oh my god oh my god oh my god

My computer won't start. It gives me the "there's something wrong, do you want to start in Safe Mode etc?" message, and then no matter which option I choose, it goes to a blue screen with white lettering and shows the following:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
/SystemRoot/System32/Config/SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory

Contact your system admininstrator or technical support group for further assistance.

The Tech Services office isn't open because it's Saturday. Anya says Alexis and Lauren know somebody in the suites who's good with computers, but they're not awake yet.

Just...can anybody tell me anything about what the w0e8h3nkjnsac;voe8yu is going ?

I'm going to sit here in the tiny LQ lab and read something soothing and try to stop hyperventilating. Maybe try to install AIM. If I succeed, I'm caisha0319.

Thank you for the info. Guess that'll be my birthday present this year...

Do you still have the install CD, or can you get hold of a bootable CD for your install (thinking XP)? If yes, you may be able to use the Recovery Console Tool, which, if it works, should keep all your data, if not all the settings.

Oh man, I have NO idea. It could be hiding in a desk drawer or it could be at home. I'll go look for it. THANK YOU.

I would say that there is a corrupted registry file. You might be able to fix it if you stick a windows cd in there and select the option to repair errors. However, my roommate had this happen, she is computer savvy, as am I, and she had to format, reinstall. You might call tech support if you want to see if there is anything you can do to save your files, but there is a good chance that you're going to have to wipe it.

Good luck, lemme know how it goes.

That's what I was afraid of *sigh* At this point, I think I'm just going to wait for my roommate to get home so I have somebody to freak out at. Thank you for the info :)

sounds like your hard drive died, or it is either the internal power or some other piece of hardware is failing (when a computer powers up it turns on its devices in a certain order if something before the hard drive powers up is broken then the hard drive doesn't get a chance to come on). my advice would be to take it to best buy and even if your hard drive is dead they might be able to get to the point where you might be able to save some things off your computer.

Ahhhh, but that would necesitate there actually BEING a Best Buy in St. Mary's. You think it would be okay if I waited till I got home this week? Worst-case scenario, obviously -- I'm calling Tech Services first thing Monday morning. I found the manual and bootup discs and stuff, but I don't want to do anything myself in case I screw it up.

Well, you can drop by and steal Bill's laptop. He only uses it to bitch at his gf and play games. We have a playstation, and he has a phone, so he doesn't "really" need it.

This is how I fix such problems. Take your computer. Lift it up. Drop it. Turn it back on. If it doesn't work, repeat. That will teach it. Note, parts of your computer tend to burn out/break easier after this happens, but normally it shakes out any of the evilness of the computer causing it to disrespect your authority and control.

If it makes you feel any better, I had to reformat my computer because my iPod didn't want to install. Then again, I'm old hat at reformatting. After 3 laptops in 5 years, I should be. If you need any info on that, let me know.
