I can't say anything about "Solomon and Gaenor" without spoilers. Jesus H. Christ. How do I consistently miss all these signals warning of A Giant Fucking Tragedy Up Ahead? Solomon trudges through the snow, coughing up blood -- yay, he'll get to her! Solomon collapses in the aunt's doorway -- yay, now they're together! Solomon too weak for broth -- it's okay, he'll get better! Gaenor climbs into bed with him -- now he'll miraculously make it through the night! SOLOMON DIES NEXT TO GAENOR AND SHE GOES INTO LABOR -- ...omg. But now she'll keep the baby! Gaenor gives the baby up and silently takes Solomon's body back home in a carriage, with nary a shot of her except from a distance or behind -- WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!
God. I think that's the most depressing movie I've ever seen. Normally I make a sharp distinction between Sad and Depressing -- it's only Sad if, no matter how much pain and tragedy, somebody Learns Something At the End. But there was not a single uplifting thing about this movie. It was the kind of monumental downer that "The Elephant Man" is to me, only I was too shocked to cry. If Gaenor had died in childbirth, it could not have been more depressing. Perhaps it would have been the tiniest bit more depressing if she had put the baby in dead Solomon's arms like I thought she was going to...no, that would have merely been disturbing.
Which is not to say it wasn't good. But damn. It was like the Siberian winter of romances.
Also depressing and good is the video to this song. I heart Evan Rachel Wood. I hope she's been busy filming something really good and that's why she hasn't been in a movie lately.
