I am in need of some help from y'all (looking in particular at
gryphons_lair and
linaelyn because I've seen or seen pictures). We're going to the Pirate Invasion weekend of the Renaissance Fair this year, and I want to whip up a costume. It needs to be three things that pretty much mean the same thing if you were to use them as an insult: cheap, easy, and fast.
So, I am looking for online catalogues -- that would be the cheap part -- or sewing patterns -- that would be the fast and easy part. When I say 'easy,' I mean 'a trained monkey with needle and thread could make it.' Don't let my ability to knit fool you. I can do exactly two stitches and one hat pattern. That's it. I haven't sewn since I was a little girl and my grandma taught me how. I believe the weekend in question is September 24th, so I don't have a lot of free time in which to make stuff.
Costume element ideas would be muchly appreciated as well. What I've got and am not willing to give up is a pair of green suede slippers that lace up the calves; they were the Christmas gift of which Dad was most proud. So boots are out. I have a very simple, very loose eggshell cotton long-sleeved blouse. I also have a green skirt that has to be rolled over till it looks like I have another stomach in order to be worn with flat shoes -- it doesn't seem particularly piratey to me, but I suppose it can be worked with. The bodice was too big last fall and I've lost twenty pounds this summer, so that's pretty much a bust. Hee. No pun intended.
Wait a minute, didn't I post pictures? Calender break -- remember how shiny? Anyway, that's what I've got as a starting point.

Help?

I don't worry about boots. I find simple platform sandals work well, or straw-like sandals. You can get these probably pretty cheap this time of year at clearance sales. Paste a few shells to the top if you like.
Sash, headscarf - your local fabric store remnant bin is your best friend for this.
Coat. Well, unless you have one, can't help you there, Sundance. Maybe you could borrow a peacoat or something similar?
I like capris for the pants. They go very well with the platform shoes, too, for standing with legs spread, looking all piratey and conquering.
Tricorn hat. Buy a big floppy-brimmed summer hat in whatever color you like. Fold the brim up to touch the side of the crown of the hat in 3 equal parts; pinch the brim points between them together and hot-glue. Hot-glue the brim to the crown, too (you should notice a tricorn shape easily enough if you're doing this right). For variance, you could thread an "X" on each of the tri-folded panels in twine or thick yarn or metallic braid-type rope. Add a big feather (bought at your fabric/craft store) as optional.
Jewelry - anything you own can be appropriated as you can imagine. Especially rings!
Makeup - Party City here has little black grease pencils for $1, which I use as kohl, in the theater makeup section. Mascara, obviously, and a bronze powder base or blush to fill in all over your face and throat, to "tan" you. Don't forget the green/gray/brown eyeshadow.
Beads in hair. I bought beads at JoAnn Etc., and a ball of cheap twine, and craft barrettes (meaning, nothing glued to them). I threaded beads on the twine, tied the other end to the barrette, and when I snapped the barrette in my hair at the temple, I could tie the headscarf over it and it looks like I have Sparrow-like hair baubles.
Any other questions?

(We don't even own a glue gun. That's how un-crafty a household we are. When a button popped off my peacoat, it was my dad who finally sewed it back on.)

Since I'm large, I bought two very cheap brown belts on sale and hooked them together, then I had plenty of belt left over to wind around through the belt at the front a few times.

Make yourself a second, ankle-length skirt<1>, wear it UNDER the green one, and tuck the green one up in 4-6 places, so it hangs in points and flounces.
For a vest, check Goodwill/StVinnies/SalvationArmy for something tapestry-ish (ideally long and straight at the bottom, but any style will do) and wear it unbuttoned over the (tucked in) blouse.
Add a big, wide, long sash at your waist (Yay remnant bins!) and a scarf over your hair, and VOILA!.
<1> Buy 3 yards of solid-color cotton. Sew the ends together. Fold the top over so the long end is at your anklebone. Sew the folded-over part into a casing. Run elastic or a drawstring thru it.
