AUUUUGGGGGHH. I have just had a conversation with my dad for the THIRD time. I told him exactly when I need to be at Oxford, therefore exactly when I need my plane to land in London, and when I need to leave in April. THREE TIMES. IN TWO WEEKS. And yet he's still all "Well, I didn't know this, and I didn't know that," and what airline do you want (I DON'T KNOW I HAVE NEVER BEEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY OR FLOWN IN TEN YEARS) and which airport do you want to fly to (I DON'T KNOW! PICK ONE IN LONDON! IT'S CLOSEST!) blahblahblah, JUST BOOK THE FRICKEN FLIGHT! I would do it myself, but I do not have the means to pay for the ticket, and apparently I cannot make them sit down and do it. We have a family friend who's a travel agent, but have they called her? Noooo, "because I can find the tickets on my own," only you HAVEN'T, and how do you know for certain Tammy won't help unless you ASK?
And now he's all "the flights were cheaper last week." Then perhaps YOU SHOULD HAVE BOOKED IT LAST WEEK WHEN I BEGGED YOU TO.
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I was at Cambridge a few summers ago and took some courses at Oxford a summer before that at Lady Margaret Hall, and would recommend flying in to Heathrow instead of Gatwick, just because it's a bigger airport with more flight options. Gatwick and Luton are kind of small airports, which are totally fine for short weekend trips to the Continent (seriously, you can fly RyanAir or EasyJet for like 50 euros to Paris from London on a Thursday) but I'm paranoid, which means that when I'm embarking on 15 hour plane rides across oceans, I want to make sure I am at an airport where I could get another flight if the one I'm scheduled on gets delayed or cancelled.
As for getting to Oxford--it's pretty easy from either Gatwick or Heathrow, as trains and buses run quite regularly. I'd check here for info on fares and schedules to Oxford from Heathrow or Gatwick.
As for airlines--if you're flying out of DC or BWI, my recommendations are British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. I flew Virgin out of San Francisco and it was really good. As for booking airline tickets, I like to check out http://www.itasoftware.com to check airfares. It's basically a travel agent's software database that lets you check airfares for almost all airlines for the dates and times you want to travel.
Hope this helps!

I still don't get why he wants me to book the tickets myself when he sees that they're cheap THAT MOMENT. I think it's a dad thing.

1) Write your dad a note stating when you need to be in Oxford. Parents need notes like that, because they are older than you are and there brain power is already failing. :-) Also there head is always full with taxes and bills and stuff.
2) You can book the flight quite easily online. Get your dad to sit down with you in front of the PC and have his credit card ready. Sometimes the booking systems also need the number of your passport. British Airways flights can be very reasonably priced.
3) Flight prices go up and down, but when you get really close to the day you want to fly prices get higher and you'll have less options. As you leave in April you don't need to panic too much yet. But I know: I always like to get things set asap.
Good luck with the booking!
And wow! Oxford! So cool. Such a beautiful place.
