Alrighty then, quick update while I have a moment to breathe.
Thursday: obscenely early for flight to BWI; moments of panic and visions of "Lost," "Final Destination," "Castaway" during takeoff; seated next to a kindly British man resembling John Williams; food disgusting, but entertainment wonderful -- watched "Pride and Prejudice," most of "Wedding Crashers" then map screen (showing location, speed, altitude, times at departure and arrival sites, ETA, etc) for last two hours; watched sun rise over (cloud banks above) County Cork; total of one hour sleep
Friday: arrived safely in Heathrow, withdrew pounds, stamped passport, found luggage, found bus, slept to Oxford; met CMRS junior dean and hauled bags to room, met roommate (Liz -- have had overwhelmingly positive experiences with persons named Elizabeth) as well as scads of other folks (37 of us in total), navigated one portion of one street successfully, napped; orientation drinks (first legal drink EVAR: that lemony Bacardi malt stuff, glass of chardonnay) and buffett dinner; excursion to Turf tavern for lovely cider and roasting of marshmallows; crash by midnight
Saturday: various orientation activities, first lunch at St. Peter's hall (fairly wretched); returning student-led tour of local Oxford (i.e. locations of groceries, ATMs, good pubs and cheap food); dinner at local Indian restaurant with several colleagues; movie night in common room -- "History of the World Pt. I," bit of "Blackadder," "Amadeus;" crash by midnight (spotting a theme?)
Sunday: field trip by bus to Tower of London; approximately 100 pictures taken (and one short video of armoury purely for the vocal inclusion of "This ain't the armoury," lots of stuff you lot will like) in the rain, purchase of souvenirs for various people (and self), Redskins hat sadly lost (playoffs!); first taste of Flavour Chicken (delicious and cheap), common room viewing of "Evil Dead 3); chilling in computer room with other SMCM people (there are 12 of us. Seriously.)
To sum up: I'm having a fabulous time so far. Have been thoroughly ignoring LJ, much as I love you all (repeat: I LOVE YOU ALL), but I'll likely be around more once I get settled in and we start classes.
P.S. Saw Nelson's Column from the bus today. My, but that's a large penis-shaped structure.

Have you discovered G&D's yet? St Aldate's, or Little Clarendon Street. For the best ice-cream anywhere. Dime Bar Crunch is brilliant.

And I feel daft that you've been here five miniutes and have seen the Tower of London, and I've been here 24yrs and haven't quite got round to it yet :)
Still, welcome! Enjoy!

Ignore us, enjoy Oxford while you can!
It sounds like you're settling in nicely. :)
I think my host took me to the Turf in Oxford. Tucked into a back-side-alley, sort of, near the all-fiction-all-the-time Blackstone's?
