I haven't seen this anywhere yet, but I haven't been reading much in detail so I might have missed it...but it's far too important to not let post, if only to remind myself. On the letters of marque, the signature 'George R' is clearly visible, so DMC has to take place in 1714 or later. As to which George signed it, it's hard to say (would II or III put the number in his signature?), but personally I'd go with George I, because we're in the last years of the golden age of Caribbean piracy, and the first quarter of the 18th century seems to pop up quite often in fic. However, I admit to knowing very little about the history of the East India Company, so that might have some bearing on the date as well.

It's nice to know that it doesn't matter that a number of my own dates in fics have been jossed, because those fics themselves have been jossed...

That's at least close to what Verbinksi was quoted as saying about POTC 1, that to his mind POTC was taking place in the 1720s, probably the late 1720s, near the end of the Golden Age of Piracy. So looks like they've decided to try and put a time on this officially then, I'll have to try and spot that date the next time I see the movie.

Of course they've fudged a whole lot of historical accuracy where the real Port Royal is concerned, so who knows which George they intend to have signed those letters? :) But your guess sounds good to me.

Oh yeah, the whole thing minus the undead pirates is an AU simply because Port Royal as they portray it in the movie was at the bottom of the bay by the 18th century :)

We all get jossed sometime. We just have to go with the flow. Like a leaf on the wind.

...fucking Joss.

::nods:: I get the idea they're going for with the EIC, though it may not be the letter of history.

Yeah, Port Royal sank in an Earthquake in 1692, I think, and the EIC didn't employ English Lords last I read.
