Oh my god. Why did I not know about this?! And it's the real, actual thing too, not imdb fucking around. His Dark Materials. Movie It's happening.
You guys realize that if this sucks, I might actually die. The only way I could have more at stake is if they filmed any Tamora Pierce, and I don't really think that's likely.
We'll go in order. First off -- Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter? I...dislike that. Very much. Eva Green would actually make a better Mrs. Coulter, in my opinion, even though she's a bit young. I've liked Kidman in certain roles, but not lately, and I just don't know if she can pull off the sinister.
Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel -- doesn't upset me as much, although Russell Crowe is and always will be my Lord Asriel. But I understand that Craig is the shit right now, and maybe if he does well in "Casino Royale," it'll pique people's interests in TGC.
I don't recognize most of the other actors except for Ian McShane, who's on "Deadwood." I don't know if I've ever heard him speak, but my imagination of his voice is good for Iofur Raknison. Apparently Pan's voice was in "Love Actually"? I'll have to look for him next time I watch it; Pan needs a sort of like voice, like Alan Cumming.
And as for Lyra, I am both glad and terrified that they've picked an unknown. Glad because at least she won't carry all the child star baggage with her, terrified because she'll carry the whole film and if she's not good, no matter if she looks the part...
Director is responsible for the "American Pie" franchise, which makes me uncomfortable, but also for "About a Boy," which was excellent, so it's a draw. And Tom Stoppard on the script? Seriously? That's...kind of awesome, no? That makes me feel a lot better.
Augh this is nerve-wracking. I love Philip Pullman to an unhealthy degree (although I generally tune him out when he starts going off about Lewis and Tolkien), and I can't believe they're really making this movie. D'you think they'll do the next two, if it's successful? The Subtle Knife would make a nice movie (Oxford!), but I'm sorry, I just can't see American audiences taking to the conclusion of The Amber Spyglass.
I'm going to be in a corner freaking out about this until it's released.

I also third the Ian McShane love. His voice is very charismatic and expressive. Oh, and I think "Pan's voice" was the teacher who introduces the choir (and apologizes) in the school concert in Love Actually. No, I haven't seen that movie 20 times. ha. haha.
And to finish this off, I must admit I've never read them. They're very near the top of the list, but just as I was about to start them, Sharpe happened. Then Patrick O'Brian, then Hornblower. Oops!
