the Dalaverse

I was listening (read: bellowing along at the top of my lungs) to "The Saga Begins" on my way home from work tonight, and I was reminded of this: a democratically elected fourteen-year-old queen (I checked Wiki just to be sure my memory hadn't failed me) is just about the stupidest idea ever. EVER. It trumps midichlorians, Greedo shooting first, and even Jar Jar (yeah, I said it!).

Now if Lucas had made her queen by hereditary right, I would have had absolutely no problem with it. Even if most everywhere else appears to be democratic, a functional monarchy on a shitty little planet like Naboo is not out of the question. But noooo /John Belushi impression. The people of Naboo ELECTED A CHILD AS THEIR RULER (and it is clearly not an empty throne). Not once, but MULTIPLE TIMES (see AotC, if you can stand it, for Amidala's successor the Whale Rider chick). Who does that?! It's not a valid system of government! No wonder the damned planet produced the evil Sith Lord who would rule the galaxy for the next twenty years!

In other fandom news, I still appreciate DMC. I feel like ripping off that icon from ages ago (made by Mel? Lin? I think one or both of you still has it) of Will standing over the chest that flashed "Will Fan, No Apologies." Only it would be a collection of shots from DMC (immediately springing to mind: Elizabeth in the rain, the kraken, Tia Dalma, Weatherby in irons, the Map Wall, scruffy James, Jack with the painted eyes, and damn near any shot of Will) and say, obviously, "DMC Fan, No Apologies." Only, also I don't have any great icon-making skill or movie-icon-making program.
