Woman faces fines for wreath peace sign

People. It is a PEACE SIGN. It is not comparable to somebody putting up "signs that say drop bombs on Iraq;" it has NO WORDS beyond its cultural definition of PEACE. Lacking any other context, it makes the exact same statement as a dove. Which also represents the Holy Ghost, so it's okay, right? Even though they are essentially the SAME THING. Did the Pope issue a statement or something about how peace is no longer IN THE GOSPELS and A HALLMARK OF THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY? I hate missing shit like that.

And WHO in HELL thought it was a Satanic symbol? Either those people win The Big Stupid, or the guy is lying and deserves it himself.

Christ, I'm in a rotten mood for no good reason. The movie had better be decent tonight or I will bitch about it all the way home. And please god tell me TDS and TCR are back, or I might not be able to sleep
Mood:: 'pissed off' pissed off

If you notice, at the end of the article it says that he fired everyone on the homeowners committee because they didn't agree with him that the wreath was offensive.

Moron. Christmas is supposed to be about peace and goodwill towards all--this guy obviously has never heard a Christmas song in his life. *eyeroll*

You'd be amazed. This is what I was taught as a kid - that it's the christian cross, inverted & broken, and that satan fools us into thinking it means something good (peace) so we'll spread it around.

...no, it didn't make much sense then either.

That is so fucked up. (But, in a sick, sad way, it's almost funny.)

Jesus Christ. I have heard some fucked up shit regarding religion, but that's a new one for me. (I just went and Wiki'd it, because I'm a dork, and apparently your experience is not uncommon. People are idiots.)

A symbol is only as good or bad as what people believe of it, and it's universally acknowledged as a peace symbol these days. Even if it ever *did* have a Satanic beginning, WTF? Christmas trees have a pagan beginning, too, but Christians don't care about THAT.

I wonder why people stir up shit over what someone HANGS ON HER OWN PROPERTY that doesn't physically hurt anyone - it isn't like she went and burned a cross in someone else's yard. Isn't free speech what we're about?

Not this guy, apparently :) And man, could we go on about influences of other religions on Christianity...

there are many things that frighten be aboout that article.
but most of all, i'm worried by the fact that people with CHILDREN at WAR are offended by a PEACE SIGN. if i were their children, and i heard about that, i'd disown them. thanks mom and dad. so you WANT me to stay overseas getting shot at. nice. there's that parental, protective instinct for you.

peace = you're kids don't come home in a box, morons.

sigh.

The peace symbol probably does have origins pre-dating it being ... well, a peace symbol. For example, take the swastika: It is now recognized almost universally as a symbol of hatred and genocide. But it has gone through many incarnations before that, including Native American usage. When I went to China several years ago, one host gave us wooden bracelets carved with what looked like swastikas, but they had nothing to do with the Third Reich - in fact, they pre-dated Hitler by a long, long time and were peaceful Buddhist in nature.

Some symbols, most notably the swastika (though if I recall correctly, the arms are turned a different way in the Buddhist symbol), yes -- but not the peace sign. It was created in the 1950s as symbol for nuclear disarmament.

You mean the one they pirated from Mercedes-Benz? The three-pointed star was patented in 1911, and it was encased within a wreath of laurels in 1926 to incorporate Daimler.

Regardless of its resemblence to existing symbols, any other association does not negate its association with peace, just as the particular Nazi perversion of the swastika will always be associated with anti-Semitism first and foremost (in the Western world, at least).

Actually, the Buddhists are trying to sort of bring it back and reclaim it as a non-offensive symbol. (That doesn't mean I was comfortable wearing my bracelet once I came back to America, though my Buddhist friend was happy enough to get it and still wears it regularly. *G*)

Buddhists in America? That's interesting. I don't think it'll work, at least not in the next several generations, but I kind of admire them for it nonetheless.
