I totally misread this! I thought you were talking about medical needles, not knitting ones, and for a second I was envisioning horrible medical disasters (Entrails! Wrapped around needles!) before reality intervened. *g*

I've tried that trick a couple of times -- cabling without using a cable needle -- and it's never worked. I always end up with, yes, a mess.

::shakes head:: I managed to get the regular cable needle-less cable figured out, thanks to the Internets, but the central pattern is made up of eight different stitches and refused to make sense.
