I'm about fifteen minutes into "Jesus Camp" and it's taking all my willpower to keep going. This movie is horrifying. I am going to have nightmares about children speaking in tongues.

I know I shouldn't be shocked, but I've never really concentrated on young children when thinking about Evangelicals. What is wrong with these people?

Those people are seriously crazy! I have been to a church (with a former friend) where the preacher was in the middle of shaking my hand and trying to get me to join the youth group (I was 22) and when I told him I was studying Buddhism, he immediately dropped my hand and walked away without saying another word. And, from what I've noticed, all of the children whose parents attend that church are very similar in their thinking, as early as 3-years-old!

I wonder what he would have done if you'd said you were an atheist.

His reaction to my telling him that my family is Presbyterian was just as bad as that of the Buddhism comment.
I have been told he actively preaches to his congregation that they are the only souls going to heaven and to hate all other religious, especially Catholics.

If you can't tell, I really have a strong desire to slap the man and I haven't seen him in nearly 5 years.

::shakes head:: That's not religion, it's cult behavior, and I wish everyone would start thinking of it that way. I'm sorry you had to deal with the guy.

I'm not. It has given me a better respect of tolerance and to be more tolerant of others. I think we all need some experiences like what I had to learn how not to act.

I was raised in that kind of atmosphere and it took $#@$ forever to get over it. Or as much 'over it' as one can get!

So I feel like I "should" see that movie. But so far I haven't, because I'm just plain chicken. *cluck*

You have my sympathies. It's a very powerful film.

Is the movie good? I've had it on my "to-watch" list for a very long time and there's something terribly entertaining about crazy militant Christian evangelists.

It's very good, very well-done. But I should warn you -- it sounds like fodder for humor, but it really isn't funny. It's genuinely upsetting and scary.

Completely understandable. And no, I really don't think you would.

(You know what I found most creepy? Even though Vanessa isn't from a charismatic church like they have in the film, she prays with the exact same language and speech patterns they used -- "I just ask that You bless us," "We just pray...", using "Lord" wherever a comma should be." Oh, it freaked me out.)

I went to those camps every summer for the first fourteen years of my life. It's actually kind of reassuring, because I know that some of them can and will escape it. But it's still horrifying and damaging behavior.

Man, you have my sympathies. It's foreign to me, and completely terrifying.

Zombie Jesus has eaten their brains.

Seriously, though. That kind of indoctrination is the hallmark of a cult. Only this is a giant cult that's got its tentacles wrapped in a stranglehold around the institutions of our federal government. We don't need no stinkin' horror stories or dystopic SF here...

It absolutely is. It is so much scarier, more pervasive, and more harmful than anyone seems to be willing to deal with. I fear for the state of our nation in twenty years when these kids grow up. Not that I don't fear for it now...

What is wrong with these people?
