tech question

This might sound incredibly stupid, but I don't know the answer. Can you replace a CD/DVD drive on a laptaop with any basic internal drive? To be specific, if I bought this DVD-burning drive, could I install it on my laptop, which only has a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive?

I've been shopping around for external DVD burners, which are way more expensive, because I was thinking you could only install an internal drive on a desktop. And then I thought...why, exactly? I would really like the answer to be 'yes,' btw, because I can justify fifty bucks but not eighty. I should have asked the guy at the store, but I was already halfway home when it occured to me that I might be able to use an internal drive.

Normally you have to get a slimline-drive - the standard size drives you get for a desktop are (physically) too big to fit in a laptop. I know it's the wrong country, but ones such as these (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=12&Category=CD+%2F+DVD&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterKeywords=&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterCategories=212&OrderBy=1) are what I'm meaning...

Yeah, I think I can order one through Dell. Not as cheap as the standard drives, but still less than an external...

I have never heard of being able to fit a desktop drive into a laptop. Usually they are just too big to fit. Also, you need a cover on the drive or it will die pretty quickly from all of the dust in the air.
I know you used to be able to purchase covers for if you wanted to use an internal desktop drive on a laptop online, but I'm not sure anymore.

I'll probably end up ordering a laptop drive from Dell. Sigh. So much hassle!

Sounds like it! I know Best Buy and Circuit City have HP external drives that work very well. If you don't want to order from Dell.
