My dearest flist,

Tonight at 10 PM EST, TCM will be celebrating the birth of our nation by airing "1776." Which is, if you've never had the privelege, the best musical about the writing of the Declaration of Independence you will ever see. Its awesomeness cannot be fully expressed in words, but I will do my best: John Adams (our angry/short Founding Father)! Benjamin Franklin (our FF of wit and colonial snark)! Thomas Jefferson (our FF of redheaded sexiness)! What's more -- they sing. You will in fact never again be able to think about colonial America without fearing or wishing everyone might burst into song. As a bonus, William Daniels is the coolest Adams ever, whether you think of him as the voice of KITT or Mr. Feeney.

I'm serious, the music is great (but not overpowering if musicals aren't your thing - the singing only takes up 30-40 minutes of a two-and-a-half hour movie), the actors are terrific (and incredibly slashy), and the script is great. But don't take my word for it, have some quotes.

Adams: I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is called a disgrace; that two are called a law firm, and that three or more become a Congress! And by God, I have had this Congress! For ten years, King George and his Parliament have gulled, cullied, and diddled these colonies with their illegal taxes! Stamp Acts, Townshend Acts, Suga rActs, Tea Acts! And when we dared stand up like men, they have stopped our trade, seized our ships, blockaded our ports, burned our towns, and spilled our blood! And still this Congress refuses to grant any of myproposals on independence even so much as the courtesty of open debate! Good GOD, what in hell are you waiting for?!

Dickinson: Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Lee, Mr. Hopkins, Dr. Franklin, why have you joined this...incendiary little man, this Boston radical - this demagogue, this madman?
Adams: Are you calling me a madman, you - you - you FRIBBLE!
Frankling: Easy, John...
Adams: You cool, considerate men. You hang to the rear on every issue so that if we should go under, you'll still remain afloat!
Dickinson: Are you calling me a coward?
Adams: Yes - coward!
Dickinson: Madman!
Adams: Landlord!
Dickinson: LAWYER!
*cane SMASH*

Adams: Do you mean to say that it is not yet finished?
Jefferson: No sir. I mean to say that it is not yet begun.
Adams: Good GOD! A whole week! The entire earth was created in a week!
Jefferson: Someday, you must tell me how you did it.
Adams: ...Disgusting.

Dickinson: Don't forget that most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor.

Franklin: Treason is a charge invented by winners as an excuse for hanging the losers.
Adams: I have more to do than stand here and listen to you quote yourself.
Franklin: Oh, that was a new one!

Adams: This is a revolution, dammit! We're going to have to offend somebody!

Hancock: Gentlemen, forgive me if I don't join the merriment, but if we are arrested now, my name is still the only one on the damn thing!

Adams: Wake up, Franklin, you're going to New Brunswick.
Franklin: Like hell I am. What for?
Adams: The whoring and the drinking.
Franklin: ::gets up and follows::

Like I said: made of utter and complete AWESOME. Watch it.

In other musical news, Mom and I are going to see Camelot with Michael York at Wolf Trap. Michael York! SQUEEEEEE! (Although she, as she keeps reminding me and no doubt will in future, has seen it with Richard Harris.)

They're evacuating the Mall because we've got this tornado warning. That is less squeeful. Also, it may prevent me from watching 1776, which is made of WOE.

In any case, happy birthday, America! ::kisses::
Mood:: 'bouncy' bouncy

I have loved 1776 since my high school did it as the very first musical my freshman year, and the movie version is full of awesome and win.

Plus, William Daniels is the MAN.

I heart William Daniels! And I love that he also played JQ Adams. He's just an Adams whore.

There's tons more humor where that came from! Also some great serious historical stuff and a couple of really poignant songs. It's a criminally underappreciated film, it really is. Let me know what you think!

I started flipping channels to see if I got it, but, uh... then I found that some channel was marathoning the Original Trilogy and the next thing I know it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm looking at Star Wars costuming sites. *facepalm*

Squee! I've loved 1776 since before I was able to own it. We had the record, the published script with a ton of making-of notes, then the VHS tape, and finally the DVD with all the scenes that were left out of my copy. The "committee scene" is priceless! And more Wilson-baiting:

Franklin: Tell me, Mr. Wilson, when you were a judge, how in hell did you ever make a decision?
Wilson: The decisions I made were based on legality and precedent. But there is no legality here, and certainly no precedent.
Franklin: [losing his temper] Because it's a new idea, you CLOT! We'll be making our own precedent!

I try to watch it every 4th. :)

Ooh, and I'm seeing Camelot as well. Michael York is fascinating.
