Answers to the random topics of discussion meme.

[livejournal.com profile] fabu asked about the peaceful co-existence of het and slash.

My basic response is "yes, please!" We're all fans, for god's sake, and to place a premium on the particular kinds of relationship we write - that it's inherently closer to canon, for example, or that it's inherently subversive and thus superior - does nothing but draw lines in the sand. More specifically, I've never considered myself as a slasher or a...hetter?, even in previous fandoms where I've concentrated on one or the other (in X-Men it was all Rogue/Logan, all the time; in HP I supported some het ships but primarily wrote slash. And in PotC, of course, I'll write damn near anything). That's just not the way my brain works.

I also don't think it's been a huge division in PotC, even now when there seem to be sharper lines drawn between shippers (though I admit it may be due to the corners where I hang out and the authors I tend to read). This may be helped by Johnny Depp's idiosyncratic performance - I don't think I've ever seen a character who was so widely accepted as apt to shag anything that stands still long enough sexually ambiguous in fandom. I mean, when you've got Jack Sparrow on your team - whichever team that may be...

[livejournal.com profile] subversivecynic asked about omnitheism. Um, is it horrible that I had to look this term up? I mean I figured I knew what it was by the roots, but I wanted to read up on it to make sure. So here's the reference I used. In general it's pretty in line with my own agnostic thoughts on spirituality and faith, and close to my experiences with the UU church - doesn't profess absolute truth but promotes the seeking of some kind of truth. I particularly like the evolutionary thread, which holds "the belief that the spiritual aspect of existence is a natural phenomenon, lik gravity or electro-magnetism."

[livejournal.com profile] tiggothy asked me to elaborate on why pies are great - with pie charts! OMG, pie is a perfect food, that's why it's great! Unlike other lesser desserts, you can make pie with any variety of flavors - fruit pies, cream pies, cheese pies, meat pies...the pie is one of the most versatile creations known to man, with only the pizza approaching its wide scope of possibilities. Also, the list of foods that can be favorably compared with sex is quite short, and thanks to Hollywood, apple pie is right at the top of it (and IMO you don't even have to sexually molest an apple pie to fully appreciate its orgasmic properties - hot out of the oven with ripe, tart apples, a just-cinammony-enough glaze, and perhaps a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream will do it for me). And let's not leave out your chicken pot pies, your steak-and-ale pies etc., as they are one of the things I love about poor maligned English cuisine. You bake some meat and some root vegetables in a hearty gravy and a crust - what the hell's wrong with that? And then, of course, there's the hallowed place that pie enjoys within the PotC fandom. I won't even touch that one.

Unfortunately I cannot produce the pie charts since I can't remember how to make them (I lied!). But I will provide you with a link to piegourmet.com for your pie-related needs.

Oh my god, I am so getting one of those baby cherry pies at Corner Bakery tomorrow.

You know, you're right - although I'm not personally fond of it, pumpkin is of great symbolic importance. Hmmm. Would the pumpkin be considered a fruit or a vegetable?

I don't see any 'shipping preferences divided between het and slash in POTC fandom (odd, since that's a common division point in other fandoms where such things occur). Rather, I see it between two het 'ships, honestly. And I'm not sure it has anything to do with the relationships themselves, so much as Jack vs. Will. I think we ought to oil them up and put them in the gladiator ring to fight it out once and for all. Naked, of course. Barehanded.

Exactly! It takes a lot of squinting to make Jack straight. Or exclusively anything. He's a Little Black Dress -- goes with everything.
