I'm not ashamed to admit that I've been keeping up with the mess on LJ through fandom_wank (in addition to my flist, naturally) - keeps me from having to wade through the countless one-word comments and cat macros to view actual content. And if I hadn't been reading f_w, I might never have learned the precise, specific reason why LJ/6A is never getting another penny from me, as expressed in these two threads.

That's all. I don't really have any words for it. I just thought others might appreciate not missing that as much as I do.

The LJ representative they've got fielding answers on the second link is apparently unable to distinguish between the two types you mention, although others have pointed out examples for each group. I'm just amazed at the ineptitude shown all around here. If the suspensions were made on basis of the law, they're on very shaky ground with obscenity laws and fictional content; if, as seems to be implied by the newest "clarification," it's made on the grounds of value judgment and/or community welfare, I think their values are fucked up beyond repair.

There's no such thing as too direct for somebody who describes an eating disorder as 'aspiring to be thin.'

Yup. It's all about de money.

I'm gonna miss those extra icons, but I won't be paying another cent to this company.

(Someone should start a comm explaining how to make the advertisements - that the free account holders have to deal with - go away. I'm betting that would disappear overnight. :-p)

Yeah, I particularly miss my icons that would properly express my mood re: stuff like this. But not enough to support the positions they've espoused over the last week. To be honest, I was honestly thinking the fandom stuff would blow over eventually - but after this? I don't think I'll care if it does.

I thought the fandom stuff would blow over, too.

I'm so very disappointed in LJ and 6A...

This is so screwed. What the fuck is wrong with people to think a community such as that to exist more than a few hours, let alone encourage it and try to downplay what it is?

If I didn't have so much of my life and friends here...

I love my LJ community/flist and was patiently waiting for the fandom to settle down again (despite starting empty accounts at the other sites). But this - this on top of everything else might be my line in the sand.

I'm thinking the same thing and will need to find the time to move everything over to GJ.

I think one of the backup programs lets you move everything, comments and all, to GJ. I'm going to look into it first thing tomorrow.

Are you thinking of LJSec? Let me know how it goes.

posted by [identity profile] yoiebear.livejournal.com at 04:18am on 08/08/2007
I have it downloaded, it just takes time to go through the crap of transferring the stuff to GJ and I haven't had the time (since last night) to look at the instructions.
It wasn't too bad about loading the stuff from LJ, just trying to figure out how to get to GJ is a bit confusing for me (especially since I'm not at all tech savvy).

I have one loaded, it just takes time to actually move the stuff over. I don't have time! LOL

Question - do you have to back everything up on a hard drive before moving it over? Does it take up a lot of memory?

posted by [identity profile] yoiebear.livejournal.com at 04:19am on 08/08/2007
I don't know. I got the stuff from LJ to LJSec, but it's confusing to move it to GJ and I gave up for a little while last night.
I would have tried it again tonight, but I've only been off work for a little more than 2 hours.

Just....WTF.

MASSIVE FAIL SYSTEM ERROR. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Pro-ana communities are incredibly triggering. There is no "benefit" for eating disordered people. Speaking from experience here.

(Although I don't know whether there are any specific laws or legal precedents about pro-ana groups the way there is about underage porn. There should be, though. Because between Harry/Snape and ana-worship, there's no question in my mind as to which is more debatably harmful.)

I don't know about the legal side, either. But pro-ana communities are against LJ's own TOS, which nixes anything promoting self-harm. Fictional minors vs. actual people...yeah.

The problem is that we're addressing this like we're working with rational individuals and we're not. It's a corporation. It's not in any way about justice or rationality or applying the TOS or the law fairly, for them. It's tempting to say that this is homophobia, but it's not exactly that: it is LJ caving to homophobic pressures, though. It's about what they think will lose them money and what they think won't. They don't actually care about protecting real children, only about protecting their corporate image.

Pardon my rant. :-) I haven't been able to load the first thread you linked to...what is that one about? Or is it more of the same?

Well said.

Do you mind if I quote you here and there (with attribution) in private LJ conversations? I've been groping toward getting the issue into a compact statement and you've done damn well.

posted by [identity profile] erinya.livejournal.com at 06:32am on 08/08/2007
Absolutely, quote away!

That's why this issue is important to me even though my own fannish activities and tastes aren't currently threatened by the deletions. Because all of this has made it very clear that LJ is no longer "ours" the way it was before the buy-out by Six Apart. Not that it should be a big surprise, but it's a very different animal than we were used to when it was Brad and his open-source blogging service and a volunteer support team that was really there for us. Now it's a tool for advertisers. The Deletegate/Strikethrough/whatever we're calling it is just the company showing its commercialized stripes in a way that affects us directly.

Exactly!

And I, for one, needed the reminder. I had had vague fears of stuff like this happening when 6A bought LJ, but they subsided when life went on pretty much as normal. Strikethrough in May was a wake-up call; nothing since has surprised me. I have been and continue to be appalled at the ineptitude and cluelessness of 6A in creating and (mis)handling the mess, but not, alas, surprised. Nor will I be astonished if/when they continue to move the goal posts by increments - all the while mouthing pious nonsense about 'protecting the children' or (very selectively) 'complying with the law.'

Gah. This place has been home, but no longer.

Very succinctly put.

The first thread contains the full text of the response the OP got when she reported one of the pro-anorexia communities, which spouts free speech while continuing to insist that these communities are supportive. The comments are pretty much in line with what's in the second thread, but without any official LJ representation commenting.

Thanks for keeping an eye out and for linking. I might not have seen those threads, otherwise.

6A had already forfeited any future money of mine, but this is the icing on the cake. Jeez.

You're welcome. It's one of the few instances where LJ has (sort of) directly answered a question and been found deeply wanting, with no fannish narrative whatsoever. I thought it was important to note.
