No good news on the iPod front. I called the Apple service hotline this morning, and the man I spoke to was useless. After I had to repeat four times that no, I had not synced the iPod and that was not what the problem was, and when all he had to offer was the hold-down-menu-and-select reset, I said 'thanks for your help, I'll take it to the store to have it looked at' and hung up. It was either that or scream at him for twenty minutes.

I got an appointment at the Apple store and, after I succumbed to the new gourmet chocolate shop (milk chocolate with orange and chili powder - mind-meltingly good), was AGAIN subjected to a patient explanation of what happens when you sync your iPod to your iTunes. When I explained even more patiently that I was simply adding a legally purchased album manually, he said he had no idea what had happened, then, but the files were definitely gone. I realize now that I probably should have asked more questions and been more pushy American, but instead I left the store while trying not to cry.

My question on the Support message board has no answers, even though every other question from yesterday and today has, which really pisses me off. If I don't have a reply by tomorrow, I'll repost the fucking question at the top of the queue. I did some poking around, and found a link to a program that scans your iPod for any usable files remaining, and can then restore them. However, I have no idea if that poster's problem is analogous to mine. I'm starting to fear that it was caused by a virus (again, something I should've asked the Apple store guy). I've been having problems with my computer for weeks, actually. It freezes quite often, and it refuses to shut down - when I select the 'turn off computer' button from the menu, it just freezes and I have to shut it off with the power button. Um, is that really really bad? Also, after I had to do this unofficial shut-down several times today, it's twice (on restart) given me a message that it can't create some file. I don't know. It's a piece of shit Dell and it's fucked up and I haven't treated it as well as I should. I'll run an Avast scan tonight while I sleep, but it'll probably just freeze.

I hate technology.

Thanks, hon. I'm convinced I'm going to be strangled by all the power cords in my room while I sleep, my run with technology has been so bad this week.

::weeps:: Lin, I think my laptop's trying to follow the iPod off a cliff. I'm going to be strangled with power cords in my sleep tonight, I swear...

That sounds like how I ask car questions - "Um, I was on the interstate, and then it started this chunky grinding in the engine, and it won't go over 35, and even then it sounds like Orcs pushing a tree along a 30-foot chainsaw. Is that bad?"

Much luck!

Thank you. So far, it has gone from bad to worse ::sighs::

If it makes you feel any better, the above was not an exaggeration; it actually happened to me. Turned out to be a $2,200 transmission rebuilding.

It shouldn't, but...yeah :) I'm contemplating watching Once Upon a Time In Mexico or Boondock Saints just for the violence, is the kind of place I'm in right now.

As a person who is on laptop number four in seven years, you might want to backup your files and do a reformat. That can fix many problems. If you need help, I'll do whatever I can.

Thank you, I'm a stone's throw away from doing just that with the state my laptop's in. I AM getting a Mac next time (easy for me to say since my parents bought both computers ::ducks::)

I agree that I AM also getting a MAC when this thing dies in a few years. That will also be about the time I'm getting a new car, too. LOL

I love my Sony laptop and the previous Sony still works OK, but I think Mac is the way to go.

I know reformatting is a bitch (believe me, I did it three times to my first laptop in the first year I had it), but it does help.

Yeah, I had to do it for my desktop. I just remembered, though - I don't have any of the boot-up discs, they're all at home. And I'm now absolutely terrified of connecting ANYTHING to the laptop - if it can delete my entire music collection, who's to say it can't wipe out the content on my thumb drives?

Gahhh. I'm taking it into town tomorrow to see if there's any kind of service place. I don't really care what I have to pay, I just wanted it FIXED. I can't write my paper on a school computer. I can't deal with the weird truncated British shift key!

OK, the idea of a key as significant as the "shift" being weird scares me.

I hope whoever takes care of your computer can fix it!
