Flist of many countries! Do I tip a hairdresser in the UK? If so, how much is standard? It's just a simple cut and blowdry, if that makes a difference.

Yes you do and I normally give mine about 10%.

Thank you! Crisis averted. I never seem to know these things until I'm up there paying. It probably varies, but do you think 17 or 18 would be enough for haircut + tip?

Yep, 'Labyrinth' is one of my favorite childhood movies. It sits in a hallowed place amongst the Holy Four, with 'The Princess Bride,' 'Return to Oz,' and 'Willow.'

Depends where you're going of course, but I'd say up to about £20 (provided you're not going to Toni & Guy or anywhere too expensive) for both.

And that sounds like a fantastic saturday afternoon's viewing right there. 'Return to Oz' is so under-rated I think - such a fab (and scary!) movie.

Um, I'm going to be superbly unhelpful and contradict

fried_flamingo by saying I've never in my life tipped a hairdresser and would never consider it. Never any way to tip, for starter - I usually pay by card in the UK and there's never an option to add anything, and I don't recall ever seeing a jar or anything either.

I've paid between £12 and £50 for haircuts in the UK, depending on location of hairdresser. Short hair at the time, so it generally needed styling more than a simple trim.

Gracias! I ended up having to pay by card anyway, and I was considering awkwardly pushing a few coins into the hairdresser's hand, but I'm glad I didn't now :)

am UK-er and have never tipped either, though that's partly because I tend to go to cheap-cheap high street chains (Supercuts etc: I paid £18 the other day for fairly drastic cut / blowdry) and / or Vidal Sassoon School (£8 last time I went, but is cut by students and can take ages). I can't remember ever seeing an obvious way to tip either my particular hairdresser or the salon in general.

Thanks! I went to Shine (which I think is a chain?) and it was more expensive than I'd thought, so I'm glad I could factor out the tip.

Thanks! I think it's pretty standard to tip across the U.S. - it's unnerving for me not to tip taxi drivers or bartenders either!

I've got to be honest I've never tipped by hairdresser either (SW UK here). But then, like

torn_eledhwen, I normally pay by card and there's no option to tip with that as far as I'm aware.
