Regarding tonight's debate, my absolute favorite moment came near the end, after Palin had responded to Biden's moment of genuine emotion re: his family by immediately returning to her lead talking point. Basically it went like this:

Palin: Somebody wants me to go offscript? MAVERICK!
Biden: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

On the whole I think it went rather well. I wanted Palin to do worse than she did, but early commentary implies that fewer people fell for her grating aw-shucks folksiness than I'd feared, so that is good. Bottom line, Palin isn't going to sink the McCain campaign with tonight's performance...but I don't honestly believe they need her to sink it anymore. McCain can do that all by his temperamental stumpy self.

November 4th, here we come!

I missed the debates tonight (no tv and new to the city...) but:

Palin: Somebody wants me to go offscript? MAVERICK!
Biden: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Yes. Thank you, yes.

It was an awesome moment and I just wish it'd come earlier.

My boss, when I walked in the office this morning, said he was disappointed because it wasn't as funny as he'd hoped.

Sadly, no - she was much too well coached for that. Which is puzzling, because you'd think one of those people would've been able to tell McCain to look directly at Obama at least a couple of times last week.

I didn't see her look at Biden once, did you? She made great (...okay, to the point of creepy) eye contact to the camera, and whenever he was talking she had her head down studying her script.

I saw her address him directly a bunch of times, which is pretty extraordinary considering she wasn't actually answering the questions...but she mostly looked at the camera. I'm sure some of it is her personal style, but I could practically hear the handlers stressing the point after what happened last week. I kept forgetting to mention it, but McCain's refusal to look at Obama reminded me SO MUCH of a news segment the characters were watching on 'True Blood,' where an anti-vamp preacher said re:the vamp advocate also on the air 'I will not speak to her directly! She is an abomination of the Lord!'

It's because McCain is an old coot and can do whatever the hell he wants.

I think that if you already hated her, she confirmed your hate (HOMG DID SHE!) and if you already liked her (your brain must be ON FIRE) you approved of her apparent increase in sentence structure, and if you were neutral you probably didn't bother watching.

On the other hand, it made me quite like Biden!

Agreed. The important thing, I think, is that because expectations were so low, she didn't gain back any of McCain's lost footing. And I heart Joe!
