Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

In order to get into the Halloween spirit, I'm gonna read some Stephen King. The household collectively owns It, The Dark Half, The Shining, Dreamcatcher, and The Stand. Plus Hearts In Atlantis, which I'm disqualifying on account of it isn't horror; and I'm also disqualifying It because a. it's an enormous heavy hardcover and b. Dad says it's boring. I've read (and was suitably freaked out by) The Shining, as well as Pet Semetary (which was terrific but which I don't own). So, your opinions please!

I have no real use for Stephen King, sorry. <3

Salem's Lot is the one with the vampires, right? I think that was actually what I thought The Stand was when I bought it, heh.

The Dead Zone was my favorite. I still love John Smith. (I even loved the movie version of that one.) And - the horror was political in nature. :P

But Pet Semetary was his most Horrific. Or, if you adore Lovecraft (tentacles!) and SciFi, The Tommyknockers might do it for you.

I freaking loved Pet Semetary. Better than The Shining, I think - mostly because I find the movie so, SO much scarier than the book.

For movie adaptations, I liked the Langoliers, and of course I ADORED Apt Pupil.

::shivers:: I am STILL creeped out by Apt Pupil. It's kind of astonishing that we get Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redeptiom and Apt Pupil out of the same novella collection.

The only one I've seen is Apt Pupil, would you believe that?

Does that one really scare you that badly? I looooved it. I think that might say something about what sort of scary I can handle.

Not so much scary as skin-crawling creepy. 'The Shining,' now...I cannot watch 'The Shining' at any time of day if I'm alone in the house. Even admitting that I'm very susceptible to horror (which is why I love it), it's absolutely the worst/best.

I don't watch horror. I can't deal with things that actually freak me out. At all. Which is why it's interesting that I adored Apt Pupil! The only part of that that hit my EEEEEK button was the dude in the basement coming up behind the kid. I don't like being snuck up on.

On the other hand, there's an episode of Dr Who that gave me middle-of-the-night creepouts for SIX MONTHS.

Ei, icon glee!

I love horror, but at the same time I know to avoid things that I know will truly freak me out. Documentaries of hauntings and such, mostly - it's all supernatural stuff, serial killers have no effect. 'Gotcha!'-type scares and lots of gore thrill me, but if it's something I can imagine is lurking in my own basement, then we have a problem.

Was that the Who with the angel statues? I heard things about that one.

THAT IS NOT A WORD, EMMETT! TAKE IT OFF THE BOARD!

Yeah, my big problem is THINGS I CAN'T SEE OR FIGHT OR CONTROL/AFFECT IN ANY WAY OMG.

Nope! I turned that one off before it could freak me. It was the one with the tiny child with a gasmask fused to it's face *cringes*

I really need to read these.

Carrie and The Dead Zone for novels, "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" for a novella.

Totally late, but I liked The Gunslinger and the rest of the Dark Tower series; epic. The only one on your list I've read is The Shining. I just don't like his endings at all.
