Flist! As you know, I wanted to get my dad the complete original series of "Star Trek" for Christmas (and while we were watching the trailer recently for the new movie he said, "I am so excited for this," so I feel extra pleased with myself).

However, this is proving easier said than done. As far as I can tell, there have been two DVD releases: one from 2002 and one from 2007. The 2007 ones are HD-DVD/DVD, which is why they're so heinously overpriced. It's also virtually impossible to find a copy of the first season - Borders would have to special order it from their warehouse (meaning my coupons would not apply). I presume this is the same situation at B&N, since it's not in stock on their website; and it's out of stock at Amazon as well. Now I can always buy used copies, but I sort of balk at doing that for a Christmas present, and anyway the used copies on Amazon are not actually cheaper than the advertised original price. (The other two seasons are both in stock everywhere and, at least on Amazon, on sale for a greater discount.)

This newer release is designated "Remastered," which usually is a good sign. But reading the Amazon reviews, it looks as though some of the special effect have been digitized. This makes me nervous in my George Lucas place, plus Dad thinks colorized movies are the devil so I don't know how well he'd respond to modernized Trek effects.

So, my question: can anyone tell me about the relative merits of the two ST:TOS DVD releases? I'm still planning on getting the second two seasons from Borders because I have a 40% off coupon for DVD boxed sets for today and tomorrow, but then...they wouldn't match. Gahhh! I don't know! Christmas is hard!

Why not go to Amazon? http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_3_9?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=star+trek+original+series&x=0&y=0&sprefix=Star+Trek

It even has all the movies. I did a quick look up for you.

I did start with Amazon - the problem is that they're out of stock on the first season (both releases, now that I look at it again). I'd rather not buy a used copy from a seller at roughly the price for a new one if I can avoid it. Plus I can get the second two seasons for less at Borders with the discount.
