OMG OMG somebody has left Fractured Prune doughnuts in the kitchen.

!!!!!1!!

Let me 'splain The Fractured Prune to you. They're a Maryland thing; you would recognize a shop by its purple paint and giant cartoon prune on crutches (it has something to do with the original owner being an adventuresome older lady who broke her leg a lot, I don't recall the exact story). The donut part of the donut is only made in one plain flavor. But what they do with it is make it hot and fresh right there in front of you; dip it in any glaze you want; and sprinkle it with chocolate chips or sugar or nuts sprinkles or coconut or a variety of other toppings. For example, I just had me a chocolate-covered cherry, which is cherry glaze with about fifty mini-chocolate chips. Because it is so hot and fresh, all that stuff melts right on the donut. And then you wait about fifteen seconds so you don't burn all your mouth off, and then you EAT that hot, fresh, sweet blessed thing. (You can of course eat them later, but they're really best scarfed down immediately.)

This experience will ruin you for all other donuts. The donuts themselves have more of a cakey taste and texture than the typical donut, so they don't get that weird hyper-fried flavor/sensation that sticks to the back of your throat after you're done eating it (even Krispy Kreme, supposedly the best chain donut, has that taste to me). And they're made to order so they're not sitting around on a shelf for a few hours. I mean, they're still tops when they're cold, it's just that eating them immediately is a thing of God because they're all hot and melty and guhhh I'ma go get another one. Perhaps an OC Sand - honey glaze with cinnamon sugar. That's what they give you if it's your first visit. That's right, A FREE DONUT.

...Is it sad that I can recognize all of the many flavor concoctions by sight? I choose to believe, instead, that it is AWESOME.

The donut that ruined all other donuts for me is the apple cider donuts at this one booth in the Union Square farmer's market. They don't have any glaze and just a small sprinkling of brown sugar, but by God, they have flavor like you wouldn't believe, and such a soft, light texture. That and a cup of hot cider - the same stuff they used for the donuts - runs about $2, and when I'm eating them standing in January snow, both hands busy, it's the best $2 I can spend at the market.

But man, now I want some frosting.

They're the best, and possibly only, argument for coming to New York City in January. Okay, that and most of the other tourists were here in December, so the subways won't be quite so heinous.

Wow, that sounds so amazing I want to visit Maryland immediately to try it.

Worth the trip! I think there's one each in Delaware, Ohio, and Pennsylvania now, but the whole thing got started in Ocean City.

I've...never actually had a Fractured Prune donut. *blushes* I've always been kind of tempted, but have never actually taken the plunge.
