Warren Jeffs is going to jail for the rest of his miserable, disgusting, monstrous life.

Yesterday the defense rested without bothering to call any witnesses - I believe Jeffs walked out so he wasn't permitted to defend himself during the sentencing process - and then the jury took less than 30 minutes to deliberate. I'm surprised it took them so long, with that evidence.

Sometimes the justice system works.

That's my deep thought for the day.

It is! Apparently he's threatening to appeal, how and with what I have no idea.

His appeal will probably be inadequate defense because his lawyer was an idiot.

Lawyers - he had six and he fired them all before deciding to represent himself. There's a new guy on the team who's aiming for an appeal and I say let 'em at it, they'll just end up wasting more FLDS money.

I was thinking more of when Jeffs was acting as his own lawyer instead of his team of lawyers.

What an idiot.

As long as the FLDS money is being pumped back into the economy, I hope appeals this case for a long time.

There was a case in North Carolina where a man has been convicted of child molestation and has announced that he plans to appeal based on inadequate counsel.

Oh yeah, the jury was afforded the privilege his flock gets every day of hearing his incoherent, nonsensical ranting.

Ugh, that case sounds horrific as well.

::nods:: It doesn't begin to make up for all the lives he ruined, but at least he can't hurt anyone anymore.

The only problem is that his sect is still out there and they continue to believe that he is a true prophet. That means they will continue to do as he instructs and chalk the fact that their leader is in prison to religious persecution. The only thing worse is if he should happen to die. Then he'll become a martyr and the religious love nothing more than a martyr. This is a crappy situation where the only ones who lose are the little girls.:(

Oh, absolutely. I'm sure the communities are all in lockdown now while they're figuring out the succession (one of Jeffs' brothers most likely, and I dearly hope they're not going to let him have any contact with his followers whatsoever). But the media coverage of the trial is heartening to me because it's provided a window into the sect that the average person has never seen before. The last big news story was the raid on the YFZ ranch, and unfortunately that was handled badly and the FLDS spin department succeeded in whitewashing the true nature of the cult. I still remember Oprah of all people being taken in by the distraught mothers and pretty pastel dresses. The vast majority of the coverage was totally irreposible. But there is just no way to spin the evidence that put Jeffs away - jurors broke down sobbing in the courtroom. I'm hopeful that public opinion has swayed enough that law enforcement will be forced to step up as they haven't done in the past.
