So it's official. I mailed the letter to TAMU today with X I decline this offer. I will be attending University of Southampton. Well, the not-going-to-TAMU part is official -- I still have to notify Southampton of my acceptance and send them my final transcript.

To quote Ani, I am thirty-two flavors and then some. I am happy and sad and excited and scared and relieved. I called my mother, to say I mailed it and to ask if we were okay. She said, in her clipped I'm-annoyed-but-pretending-to-be-polite-so-you-can't-say-I-yelled voice, "Well, I had some other things for you to consider, but you've already mailed it, so." Then she had to go because of work. Whatever. I want things between she and I to be okay, but honestly? My dad's opinion matters more to me than anything in the world, and he thinks this thing I am doing is a little stupid but ultimately brave and admirable.

My mind's made up, but it was harder to actually put that letter in the mailbox and walk away than I'd thought it would be. I went and got a milkshake on my way to work to calm my nerves. Don't judge. And now I'm sitting here and should really get back to my data entry, but I just couldn't let the moment pass without comment.

Good for you. I think it's probably a good thing, too, that you mailed it and then talked to your mom. I hope she comes to terms with it, but if not, you still gotta do what's best for you.

*hugs* Congratulations - really admirable, following your heart.

I look forward to meeting up again sometime in the not-too-distant future :-)

Thanks :) And I can't wait to come see you again! I know Southampton is 1 to 1.5 hours south of London, so that would make it about 2.5 or 3 hours from Oxford, right?

I don't know, but I have a driving licence now, and access to the car when husband isn't needing it! w00t!

I think it's about 2 hours, but I'll ask the people on my workshop course who come from Southampton. It's pretty much straight up/down the A34 (though that's not the best of roads).

But hey, you'll be there a couple of years at least, yeah? Plenty of time to be meeting up for ship-squee!

Well done. Enjoy Southampton. I recommend the Boat Show - it's in September. :) Last year the Jubilee Sailing Trust brought their ships Tenacious and Lord Nelson.

I've been following this and hoping you would do the UK thing. I'm ridiculously close to my parents so I understand your dilemma. Cheers, on being uber brave.

You're absolutely right -- I think maybe I shouldn't have called her. I have always had trouble dealing with my mother, and it's hard to get a sense of perspective sometimes.

Thanks, love :)

I am very proud of you! (and a bit jealous)

As one only child to another, congrats for being so brave. I hope I have your strength when it comes time for me to fly the coop!

Thank you :) Did you say something about an internship in London...?

I'm going to start looking for something in London in the near future. I think being that far from home will help me and my parents. Not only that, but I have been looking for a reason to go back for 9 years!

That's exactly what I was thinking when you mentioned you were going to Southampton! I have wanted to go somewhere else, somewhere big, for a long time and have held back a bit because I don't know anyone anywhere. But, with you there, I think I would be more inclined to be comfortable in the beginning.

That's understandable, and I would love to lend any support I can. Plus, I don't know if you know [livejournal.com profile] tiggothy, but she lives fairly nearby in Oxford and is awesome.

I don't know her. I have kept my friends base on lj pretty light, actually.
