I am off to Galveston, TX to visit my uncle. It's the first time my family has flown all together since before I can remember, so it should be interesting. I've had people look at me askance when I say I'm going on vacation in Texas, but it is mostly because Uncle Bob lives there and we never get to see him. Also, he loves going out to eat and will probably pay for every meal. I'm just saying. And at least there are beaches. Even relief from the heat, by a few degrees.

Taking my laptop with me in case the hotel has 'net access. I am looking forward to landing in Houston and seeing people wear cowboy hats in utter sincerity. If anybody can think of stuff to do in Galveston, please suggest it (I understand there is a tallship?) What I'd like to do is go LJ-visiting, but I have the parents along and we haven't the time anyway.

I understand there is a tallship?

Yes, the Elissa. She doesn't do public sails, as the Friends Good Will does, but I believe you can tour her dockside.

Tell them you're a friend of a friend of Derrith's. *g*

The Elissa is the tall ship and she is lovely. She's moored at the Strand which is a touristy strip of gentrified Victorian shops. Watch out for the curbs. They are high for a very good reason, but they throw folks who aren't used to them.

The Seawall is interesting from an architectual point of view, but Bishop's Palace makes for a better tour, or at least it did some time ago. Take the extra ten minutes to watch the film, and then go walk the Seawall and look at the jettys.

For beachcombing, so away from the main end of the island. In fact go to the tips, past Apfel park or out on the other, more residential end.

What hotel are you staying at? I think the Holiday Inn has i'net, but I suspect they cahrge for it.

The Elissa.

Our recently deceased captain on the Kalmar Nyckel was, once upon a time, the bosun of Elissa. He spoke of her fondly. Often. *g*

Galveston, oh my. We used to go down there all the time for vacation when I was a kid (read: 7 or 8), but I'm pretty sure I remember touring the Elissa. My family liked to visit the Moody Gardens museum--there was a glass pyramid with all sorts of animals in it--more kids' stuff, though. I can't think of anything much I did that would be more adult-type. Have you been to NASA in Houston?

All I remember about Galveston are the Elissa (she's a pretty little ship) and the Bishop's Palace. A home with three foot thick walls that was the only building to survive a hurricane back around 1900. There are tours, perfect for parental units. Um, is there a retired battleship there, too? I know I toured one somewhere... *Googles* Yes! The USS Texas, and there's the San Jacinto Monument nearby.

I found something for you. E-mail me your name and mailing address, as I no longer have it, and I'll send it along ...

Hi, I know this is probably annoying and you don't want this here, but... I just wanted to say hello. I saw you in the nor_am_ac_uk community, and noticed that you're going to Southampton. I am, too, but I'm going to ...*squeaks*Solent. I know theres a big rivalry and whatnot, but I just thought it was cool that we'd be in somewhat of the same area. I was afraid I'd be the only American for miles. =(

Well, anyway. ..Er, yep.

Not annoying at all! Good to talk to a fellow embarkee, even if you are going to The Other Place :) Perhaps we can meet up when we get there. What are you studying?

I honestly don't know how I'd get through this whole process without that comm. It's priceless.

I knoww, I'm so glad I found it. God, I'm so worried about going. It's bad enough I'm going to stick out for being American, but I also have a HIDEEEOUUSS southern accent that I am desperately trying to get rid of. Haha. Oh man.

I'm studying computer art design (3d modelling and whatnot). What about you?
