Baseball Announcer On TV: He got some real wood on the ball there.
Dala: OMGWTFLOL!
Dad: What?
Dala: ...Did you hear what that guy said?
Dad: It's a baseball term!
Dala: It's funny.
Dad: No it's not, it's BASEBALL! It's not dirty OR funny! *hmmph*
...I don't care who you are, that's funny right there. And people call football homoerotic. Which it is, but too.
I also think it's hilarious that one of my friends works on Morningwood Drive, in case you wanted to know.
My god, I am so done with this laptop, I'm not even going to refer to it by name. I bought a new battery charger (because the stuff covering the wires where it plugged into the laptop was wearing away and it became impossible to keep it plugged in) last summer. Then a few weeks later, I started getting the message that 'your battery is charging normally; however, it is reaching the end of its usable life. This thing was purchase in February 2006; when I bought a new battery for it, it was about one and a half years old. Now it's two and a half, and the fucking battery is dying again!
Am I totally offbase here? Is this normal for laptops in general, or just because it's a shitty Dell? I don't really want to buy another battery because I don't intend to have it much longer. The plan is to scrape pennies together, ask for a contribution as my Christmas present and splurge on a Sony Vaio in December. December's just starting to seem like a long way away. It only holds a charge about forty-five minutes now, and it gets so hot on the bottom that I'm leery of leaving it sitting on my scrapghan for too long. Plus its inner machinery has started making some scary whirring noises.
Ugh. I'd just like to know if it's crappy parts or something I personally did to offend the technology gods, so that I can avoid this problem in the future. I'm not a saint; I download quite frequently and I've had one serious virus attack that cause me to wipe the hard drive. But I don't run anything that takes up lots of memory, I don't regularly hurl it to the ground or anything. This short a shelf life just seems ridiculous. This is my first laptop, though, so what do I know.
I might really chuck it out the window once it finally kicks the bucket. I hate waste, but for so long I've restrained myself from violent action against all manner of rebellious technology, and it would feel so good to carry out just one of those threats...
And you know you love my yinyang egg.

One of my old teachers told the class a story - this is back in middle school, maybe 1999 - about how he got so frustrated with his laptop he took it to the top of his apartment building and tossed it out into the parking lot. He had the greatest expression when he told us how free he felt, watching it hang in the air for a moment...

But that story is awesome.

As for the overheating and whirring noises - that doesn't sound good. The whirring could be the hard drive getting ready to croak. As for the heat - I know all the advertisements show people plunking laptops down on sofas and beds and carpets and then smiling like Stepford people at the screens, but it's really, really not good for the machinery. I always put mine on a hard surface - a big book, or a clipboard or something - when using it on anything but a desk/table. They need that tiny space underneath to breathe.

It is also bad to have it not - horizontal a lot? Like, I often sit in bed with it propped up on my knees, or on its side while I'm watching a movie?
I will have to treat the new one with more deference, I'm thinking.

Seriously, back up your files pronto. The HD may limp along for quite a while or it may just quit. Once it does that, retrieving your files becomes a problem, and expensive. Also, I've found that backing up the files, so that you're ready for disaster? Prevents it. Some kind of screwy corollary to Murphy's Law, I figure. *g*

Sport - yep, all sport has silly terminology. I've trained my husband to just roll his eyes now rather than arguing with me for giggling. I find American football and cricket are the best for giggles :-)

Yeah, I've about had it with Dell. It might be partially my abuse of the laptop, but I still think I'd get a much better value out of Sony (or a Mac, could I be persuaded to give up Windows).

As for baseball, yeah, "wood." LOL (Again, I'm mentally 12)

Forgot to say - I HEART your Paula icon.

I thought you might like that. If you saw the entire photo, you'd probably laugh like Paula. Alton Brown had his head going for her breasts. ROFL

Laptop batteries aren't really meant to last more than 2-3 years--that's how they screw you over. :( And it's not just Dell--I've seen dead laptop batteries after a year in a couple of different brands.

or maybe the battery is getting old (if so, lame) and is getting overheat-y and needing more fan-use. idk.
sorry, probably not very helpful, there!
also, my mom has a vaio, and it's pretty awesome, I'd recommend it. ^_^
