Baseball Announcer On TV: He got some real wood on the ball there.
Dala: OMGWTFLOL!
Dad: What?
Dala: ...Did you hear what that guy said?
Dad: It's a baseball term!
Dala: It's funny.
Dad: No it's not, it's BASEBALL! It's not dirty OR funny! *hmmph*

...I don't care who you are, that's funny right there. And people call football homoerotic. Which it is, but too.

I also think it's hilarious that one of my friends works on Morningwood Drive, in case you wanted to know.

My god, I am so done with this laptop, I'm not even going to refer to it by name. I bought a new battery charger (because the stuff covering the wires where it plugged into the laptop was wearing away and it became impossible to keep it plugged in) last summer. Then a few weeks later, I started getting the message that 'your battery is charging normally; however, it is reaching the end of its usable life. This thing was purchase in February 2006; when I bought a new battery for it, it was about one and a half years old. Now it's two and a half, and the fucking battery is dying again!

Am I totally offbase here? Is this normal for laptops in general, or just because it's a shitty Dell? I don't really want to buy another battery because I don't intend to have it much longer. The plan is to scrape pennies together, ask for a contribution as my Christmas present and splurge on a Sony Vaio in December. December's just starting to seem like a long way away. It only holds a charge about forty-five minutes now, and it gets so hot on the bottom that I'm leery of leaving it sitting on my scrapghan for too long. Plus its inner machinery has started making some scary whirring noises.

Ugh. I'd just like to know if it's crappy parts or something I personally did to offend the technology gods, so that I can avoid this problem in the future. I'm not a saint; I download quite frequently and I've had one serious virus attack that cause me to wipe the hard drive. But I don't run anything that takes up lots of memory, I don't regularly hurl it to the ground or anything. This short a shelf life just seems ridiculous. This is my first laptop, though, so what do I know.

I might really chuck it out the window once it finally kicks the bucket. I hate waste, but for so long I've restrained myself from violent action against all manner of rebellious technology, and it would feel so good to carry out just one of those threats...

And you know you love my yinyang egg.

Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

I don't know, I've had this Dell since 2004 and it's still working just fine.

One of my old teachers told the class a story - this is back in middle school, maybe 1999 - about how he got so frustrated with his laptop he took it to the top of his apartment building and tossed it out into the parking lot. He had the greatest expression when he told us how free he felt, watching it hang in the air for a moment...

Sigh. That makes me think it was something I did. I didn't meant to hurt you, laptop baby!

But that story is awesome.

I've had my Dell laptop since July 2003 and it's still going strong. Actually, it *just* developed it's first age-cranky symptom: the down-arrow key has gone wonky. It sounds to me like you are damnably unlucky, alas and woe.

As for the overheating and whirring noises - that doesn't sound good. The whirring could be the hard drive getting ready to croak. As for the heat - I know all the advertisements show people plunking laptops down on sofas and beds and carpets and then smiling like Stepford people at the screens, but it's really, really not good for the machinery. I always put mine on a hard surface - a big book, or a clipboard or something - when using it on anything but a desk/table. They need that tiny space underneath to breathe.

That is...something I fail to do. A lot. I was pretty good at keeping it on the desk at school, but basically this summer it's lived on my bed and on my carpeted floor. So...it's bad, yes? ::cringes::

It is also bad to have it not - horizontal a lot? Like, I often sit in bed with it propped up on my knees, or on its side while I'm watching a movie?

I will have to treat the new one with more deference, I'm thinking.

The orientation isn't very important, but the overheating *definitely* is. I'm guessing you've cooked your HD or are in the process of doing so. If you haven't backed up your files recently, I suggest you do so immediately!

Sigh. Replacing a hard drive is expensive, I suppose?

well, an internal hard drive doesn't usually cost very much. But actually doing the replacing is something I turn over to my IT buddies. It is a pain in the ASS getting all the data migrated, unless you have the equipment to run both drives at once and so forth. And I dislike messing around inside the case, anyway. I have a real dread of static electricity around the mother board, so I leave that to the experts.

Seriously, back up your files pronto. The HD may limp along for quite a while or it may just quit. Once it does that, retrieving your files becomes a problem, and expensive. Also, I've found that backing up the files, so that you're ready for disaster? Prevents it. Some kind of screwy corollary to Murphy's Law, I figure. *g*

Laptop - I'd say definitely get a new one, different make. We bought our Toshiba Portege over 4 years ago now, and the only problem we've had with it was when I got biscuit crumbs stuck under one of the keys & couldn't log in!

Sport - yep, all sport has silly terminology. I've trained my husband to just roll his eyes now rather than arguing with me for giggling. I find American football and cricket are the best for giggles :-)

Hee! I have a good friend who is mad into cricket, but I have to admit I've never seen a match (they ARE called matches, right?)

Yeah, I've about had it with Dell. It might be partially my abuse of the laptop, but I still think I'd get a much better value out of Sony (or a Mac, could I be persuaded to give up Windows).

Yeah, they're matches. I've never been to one, just had it on the telly while I've been doing other stuff. Apparently the radio commentary is more hilarious, as they spend more time talking about the teas than the actual game...

One of the many things that made me fall in love with baseball this year is realizing that I could snicker at almost everything the announcer said. Although some phrases are better than others. I love being 12 years old inside. May that never change.

I LOVE my Sony Vaio!! It's a fantastic computer (as far as Microsoft goes). I've had him (still no name...) for two years this Christmas season. He is my second Sony. The first is still going strong and I use him as a backup. I replaced him because he was starting to slow down and couldn't really keep up with all the stuff I do. But, they were both very good investments.

As for baseball, yeah, "wood." LOL (Again, I'm mentally 12)

Good to have another rec - a friend of mine at Southampton had a Vaio and she said she never had any problems with it. Thanks!

Forgot to say - I HEART your Paula icon.

My Vaio is my baby (one of them).

I thought you might like that. If you saw the entire photo, you'd probably laugh like Paula. Alton Brown had his head going for her breasts. ROFL

My Dell's laptop battery died after about a year and a half, and I haven't bothered to replace it (then again, it's far too big for me to tote around anywhere, so I haven't really felt the NEED to replace it)

Laptop batteries aren't really meant to last more than 2-3 years--that's how they screw you over. :( And it's not just Dell--I've seen dead laptop batteries after a year in a couple of different brands.

::grumbles:: It's good to hear the whole thing doesn't just die on you if you don't replace the battery, though. It'd be good to have this one as a backup even if I don't want to feed it more money (and if I restain myself from chucking it out the window of course.)

er, randomly popping in to suggest perhaps a problem with a/the fan? the overheating + whirring noises point to something of the sort, and that might be having an effect on the battery, too. *shrug*

or maybe the battery is getting old (if so, lame) and is getting overheat-y and needing more fan-use. idk.

sorry, probably not very helpful, there!

also, my mom has a vaio, and it's pretty awesome, I'd recommend it. ^_^

Gracias for the suggestions! Yeah, I heard the Vaio was a good choice for people who need a Mac but don't WANT a Mac :)
