As someone with pretty crappy laptop experience (I'm on #4 in 9 years), I can tell you that Sony computers are very worth the cost. I have spent about $3,000 on the two Sonys I have owned and believe they are well worth it.
My old Sony was almost 4 when I replaced it with a new Sony. It still works, but is very slow and it was getting tired. I didn't need to purchse the second when I did as far as the previous computer was concerned, I just didn't want Vista.
The makes of the two laptops I had before was Compaq and HP (both were before the two companies merged). The Compaq was a floor display and while the store said it was "refurbished", it was the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. Within 6 months of getting it, I had to reformat the harddrive because the computer wouldn't shut down and had NO sound. It was terrible. I used it for 18 months before I convinced the parents to let me get another computer. While I wanted a Sony at the time, Dad insisted the HP would be a good fit for me. It was, for about 6 months and then it just decided to be as crappy as the Compaq. I put up with it's shit for more than 2 years before I threw in the towel and scraped out the money for the first Sony out of my savings account.
In other words, I recommend a new Sony. I know money is tight (I'm still paying off the current Sony and it's been nearly 2 years), but it is well worth it.
