I mentioned awhile ago that I need to get a new laptop, as mine is not-so-slowly dying. I really want to get a Sony Vaio and have been surfing their website, making faces at the prices. In addition to very attractive brand-new notebooks, they also sell them refurbished.
My question is, have any of you guys ever bought a refurbished computer or can tell me anything about the process? According to the Sony website (here), it seems like there's nothing wrong with them except possibly a few "cosmetic blemishes," about which I don't give a shit as long as it works okay. But I hesitate to buy used for something like a computer, and I want to hear any bad or good experiences y'all might have had with it. It seems like a good idea, but that's way too much money to waste if the opposite is true.
The cheapest new laptop is $799 and the cheapest refurbished one is $549 ($599 if I want a 200GB hard drive versus 160GB). That's a pretty big difference on my budget, even if I ask for a Christmas contribution from my parents.
In other news, I heart my new LJ theme, even if the new profile page is kind of dumb. And I've sent requests for Inauguration Day tickets to two senators and my representative. I sincerely doubt I'll get them, but figured I had to at least try. I'll be on the Mall January 20th, regardless.

My old Sony was almost 4 when I replaced it with a new Sony. It still works, but is very slow and it was getting tired. I didn't need to purchse the second when I did as far as the previous computer was concerned, I just didn't want Vista.
The makes of the two laptops I had before was Compaq and HP (both were before the two companies merged). The Compaq was a floor display and while the store said it was "refurbished", it was the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. Within 6 months of getting it, I had to reformat the harddrive because the computer wouldn't shut down and had NO sound. It was terrible. I used it for 18 months before I convinced the parents to let me get another computer.
While I wanted a Sony at the time, Dad insisted the HP would be a good fit for me. It was, for about 6 months and then it just decided to be as crappy as the Compaq. I put up with it's shit for more than 2 years before I threw in the towel and scraped out the money for the first Sony out of my savings account.
In other words, I recommend a new Sony. I know money is tight (I'm still paying off the current Sony and it's been nearly 2 years), but it is well worth it.
