We have to read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and it's my turn to present a chapter. Which just happens to be the one on "synergy," a word that makes me want to stab myself with a fork.

I'm sorry, I just think this book is abysmally stupid. It's all made-up corporatespeak which could be boiled down to one simple message: Don't be an asshole. The end. I honestly do not understand what people get out of stuff like this.

Sigh. I suppose Cynthia and I will just have to cobble something together (she hates the book too). If I can even manage to get through a page.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Fucking duh.

"Synergy" makes me smile, as a word, but that may be because it a) looks fun and b) is linked to X-Files in my brain. :D

OMG the text is so annoying. Synergy is MAGICAL, it's a MIRACLE. Seriously, those are the author's actual words. Glad to know I haven't missed anything from the first five habits.

I haven't read any of that, nor do I particularly intend to, but my impression is his religious views shade the entire thing pretty strongly.

That does not surprise me. He's now talking about a corporate retreat in which they wrote a mission statement, ON A MOUNTAIN, rather like the Sermon on the Mount. My mom's church used to have a youth pastor who talked like this, actually. He came into my comparative religion class playing the guitar, and my teacher totally ripped him a new one (she was awesome, and brooked no bullshit).

It's like televangelists. Big toothy smiles, lots of "I" statements, but there's no meaning behind the words.

...I would never succeed in the corporate world, clearly.

I'm sure you're deeply distressed by this concept. ;)

Oh, devastated.

Sigh. At least I can take fic-reading breaks.

Ironically, being an asshole is often what gets you ahead in corporate America. Go figure.

Books like that are written for people with no manners, no common sense, and no people skills. Normal people like you and I roll our eyes at such drivel, but seriously, there are people out there who do not know how to not be an asshole and need books to tell them how. It's sad, isn't it?
